Under general supervision transports or shuttles patients visitors staff and materials to various destinations inside and outside of medical facilities; performs other related duties as required.
The Medical Transportation Technician is the journey level classification in the Medical Transportation Technician series and reports to a Supervising Medical Transportation Technician. Incumbents perform the full range of duties requiring a greater technical knowledge and are responsible for providing nonemergency transportation or shuttle services with relative independence as supervisory guidance is not available when away from medical facilities.
The Medical Transportation Technician is distinguished from the Senior Medical Transportation Technician classification in that the latter functions in a lead capacity.
Transport patients visitors and staff between various service areas; pick up and drop off patients or staff at designated shuttle service areas between various medical office buildings.
Verify patients identification and obtain signature of patient or authorized person to comply with patient health information regulations.
Operate designated County vehicles to provide transportation and shuttle services to patients visitors and staff.
Maintain simple records concerning transportation services provided and vehicle maintenance needs; ensure vehicles are clean and properly supplied.
Assist patients visitors or staff into and out of the vehicle facility or their homes to ensure they are not injured when entering or leaving the vehicle; may use an automated lift.
Attend to patients or clients safety and comfort en route by driving carefully and in accordance with state and local traffic laws ordinances and County policies and procedures.
Remain available for oncall weekend and evening assignments.
OPTION I
Education:Graduation from high school or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test.
Experience: Six months of providing basic patient care.
OPTION II
Education: Graduation from high school or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test.
Experience: Six months of providing transportation and/or support services for a medical health senior citizen social services or similar community agency which must have included the transportation of clients to and from hospitals healthcare facilities or other institutions. (Completion of a recognized training program in basic patient care may be substituted for three months of the required experience.)Other RequirementsLicense: Possession of a valid California Drivers License.
Possession of valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificates issued by the American Heart Association.
ALL OPTIONS
Knowledge of: The proper body mechanics in lifting and transferring patients; operation and minor maintenance of medical transportation vehicles (i.e. bus and vans); road rules and regulations.
Ability to: Read write and speak the English language; learn medical facility routines and techniques; perform basic patient care; follow oral and written directions; maintain simple records; apply proper body mechanics in lifting moving and assisting patients; apply proper body mechanics in lifting and moving at least 100 pounds; handle patients in a manner which will not aggravate their condition; follow maps and directions; use good judgement when acting independent of supervisory guidance.
This classifications rate of pay will be set in accordance with California Senate Bill 525 requirements for applicable departments.

PreEmployment
