Job Description
1st Class Rigger 2nd Shift)
Purpose:
Colonnas Shipyard is seeking a 1stClass Rigger to support 2nd Shift operations in our Shipyard in Norfolk VA.
*This position will support 2nd shift operations 3:30PM 12:00AM).
Job Description:
- Learn the correct equipment and lifting devices that will bear heavy loads.
- Select the right tools that will enable Rigger to move and position heavy objects in a safe and efficient manner.
- Possess working knowledge of weight testing IAW specified Tech manuals for equipment such as Cranes Davits Winches Anchors and anchor chains etc. within safety guidelines.
- Controls movement of heavy objects/equipment through narrow openings and confined spaces using jacks pulley blocks chain falls and rollers.
- Install hooks swivels and turn buckles.
- Signals workers operating cranes or other equipment to move load.
- Selects and attaches gear braces and cushions according to weight and distribution of load.
- Controls costs in assigned area of responsibility and recommends to management improved methods of operation that could result in cost savings for the department and company.
- Train and supervise lowerlevel mechanics and semiskilled employees.
- Responsible for knowing and understanding company policy.
- Work independently to complete responsibilities
Qualifications:
- Must have at least seven 7 years experience as a Rigger.
- Must have knowledge of chain fall/strap loading.
- Must be able to rig large loads safely.
- Must have experience with underwater hull propulsion rigging (rudders propellers fin stabilizers shafts etc..
- Must have knowledge of ships structure anchor chains and associated equipment staging construction cranes and their capacities/chart ships mooring etc.
- Must be able to climb and have no fears of elevated heights.
Desired Qualifications:
- Prefer knowledge of underwater hull rigging of shafting propellers rudders etc.
- Prefer previous shipyard experience.
Security Requirements:
- Position requires US Citizenship.
Travel Requirements:
- Minimal Travel; 10 or less.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job but no less than 20 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders work in extreme temperature environments aboard ships in shipyards under industrial conditions and in confined spaces including enter and moving through manholes.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat humidity noise and dirty conditions working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks forklifts & manlifts.
- While performing the duties of this job you may frequently be required to stand walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and required to reach with hands and arms climb and balance stoop squat kneel twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
- Frequent use of respirator.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding cutting or working with molten metal.
