We seek a professional knowledgeable Carpenter for a regular fulltime position. The essential responsibilities for the Carpenter may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Estimates dimensions such as height width and length as required for projects.
  • Performs carpentry maintenance and repair tasks by:
    • Inspecting work sites to determine necessary materials tools and equipment.
    • Developing project plans or following blueprints sketches or schematics.
    • Assembling fabricating installing and repairing materials equipment and fixtures.
    • Providing cost estimates for repairs or replacements beyond capability.
    • Recommending additional personnel or contractors as needed to meet deadlines.
  • Conducts skilled carpentry work related to construction maintenance repair remodeling and alteration of building structures and facilities including:
    • Working with materials such as wood plastic fiberglass and drywall.
    • Assembling structures using nails screws staples and adhesives.
    • Working on ladders stilts or high beams.
    • Ensuring compliance with building codes and specifications.
    • Using tools such as levels rules plumb bobs framing squares and surveying equipment.
    • Installing prefabricated structures cabinets molding and furniture.
    • Constructing stairs mantels concrete forms and tunnel bracing.
    • Erecting scaffolding and replacing building components such as ceiling tiles doors and windowpanes.
    • Painting moving and installing machinery as needed.
  • Utilizes hand and power tools including saws hammers chisels drills presses sanders joiners planers panel saws and mortising machines to complete projects.
  • Provides technical input on carpentry equipment purchases based on department needs.
  • Maintains accurate records of time materials and project status providing periodic reports to the Carpenter Foreman.
  • Actively supports the Ports mission and vision and demonstrates values consistently.
  • Works effectively as a team player with all Port employees.
  • Supports the overall success of the Facilities Maintenance Department by completing other tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a carpentry vocational/technical school or a recognized apprenticeship program is preferred.

Experience: Minimum of five 5 years of experience in carpentry or building trades required or any combination of education training and experience that demonstrates the required skills and abilities to competently perform the job. Five 5 years of progressively responsible construction experience is preferred.

License/Certification:Valid unrestricted drivers license. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card) upon hire required. Valid manlift certification and welders certification preferred or willingness and ability to obtain.

Analytical skills: Ability to collect and analyze data apply logical reasoning and develop solutions based on relevant factors.

Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively convey messages across all levels of the organization.

Organizational skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks balance priorities and meet deadlines in a fastpaced environment.

Problem solving skills: Ability to logically assess issues gather information and implement effective solutions.

Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to utilize jobrelated software.

Flexibility: Willingness to adapt to changing situations and work extended hours when necessary.

Physical Requirements/Environment:

  • Physical ability to sit stand bend push/pull reach stoop and kneel for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Talk hear and walk on a frequent to regular basis.
  • Repetitive hand motions on a frequent basis including grasping and handling.
  • Ability to read printed and digital materials.
  • Ability to climb stairs and work at heights using ladders scaffolding or other structures.
  • Ability to lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to drive on an asneeded basis.
  • Work is performed in office environments and at various outdoor locations where adverse weather conditions uneven ground exposure to moving machinery and moderatetoloud noise is common.

The physical and mental requirements described above are representative of the physical and mental capabilities that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this position. In a normal workday frequent and continuous refer to more than a 50 requirement; regular refers up to 50 and seldom refers to approximately 10.

Additional Requirements

The Port of Vancouver will require the selected candidate to successfully pass a drug screen background and reference checks prior to the start of employment.

The successful candidate must possess a valid drivers license. Candidate must be able to successfully complete all preemployment screenings. Candidate must also be able to obtain/maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) which is a program managed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
