DEFINITION / GENERAL PURPOSE:
Responsible for the supervision of a recreational day camp for youth.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Under the general supervision of the Recreation Specialist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Attendance is an essential job function.
Assist and participates in daily camp activities and weekly trips including swimming hiking sports games and other summer childrens activities scheduled throughout camp (e.g. when at the lake or swimming pool counselors are in the water swimming and playing with the campers while providing active supervision).
Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities planning and leading those as assigned.
Camp counselors must supervise campers ensuring proper attention to health happiness discipline and safety.
Must be able to follow directions.
Physically and mentally capable of supervising groups of children.
Responsible for administering first aid according to prescribed procedures and notifying emergency medical personnel when necessary.
Teaches a variety of activities based on individual abilities and needs of the camp.
Responsible for reporting all accidents or safety issues immediately to supervisor.
Greet new arrivals to activities introducing them to other participants explaining facility rules and encouraging participation.
Confer with management to discuss and resolve participant complaints.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
Must be able to work afternoons and evenings.
Performs other essential duties as assigned.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or GED equivalent.
6 (six) months of related experience is preferred.
CPR and First Aid Certification or ability to obtain prior to start of camp.
Valid Texas Drivers License prior to employment.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of recreational programming and specials events is preferred.
Knowledge of day camp operations scheduling training and use of computers and related software is preferred.
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
Ability to maintain good working relationships with coworkers and the general public through use of effective communication skills.
Ability to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude.
Ability to work outdoors for extended hours
Ability to observe camper behavior assesses behavior for appropriateness enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
Skill in First Aid and CPR
Ability to work and communicate with young children and coworkers. A positive attitude is a must!
Excellent organizational skills and strong written and verbal communication skills with all age groups.
Good interpersonal skills
SELECTION GUIDELINES:
Formal application rating of education and experience; oral interview reference check criminal background checks and drug screens are required. Job related tests may also be required.

Recreational and sports equipment.

While performing the duties of this job the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions toxic or caustic chemicals.
