POSITION OVERVIEW
The Vice Chief of Clinical Affairs (VCCA) oversees all clinical operations and anesthesia providerswithintheDepartmentofAnesthesiologyacrossBMCBrightonwhereveranesthesia services are provided.
TheVCCAcollaborateswiththeChiefSeniorAdministrativeDirectorandotherdepartmental leaders in the development and implementation of the Departments strategic goals and objectives. The VCCA reports to the Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Represents the Chair as needed in Hospital affairs.
- Supervises all the clinical area Directors of the Department of Anesthesiology including but not limited to Cardiac Anesthesia Critical Care OB Anesthesia and Quality and Safety.
- Chairs the Clinical Operations Committee which meets biweekly. The membership of this committee consists of the Chair Chief Administrative Director Division Directors and Scheduling Coordinator.
- Oversees the daily clinical assignments oncall and vacation schedules to ensure the Department operates with the safest and most efficient staffing model to meet the needs of BMC.
- Works with the Chief and Administrative Director in recruitment and retention to meet staffing needs.
- Assists and advice the Chief in all recruitment activities.
- Formulates and oversees the departmental Quality Program in coordination with the Director of Quality and Patient Safety.
- Creates and implements clinical efficiency initiatives of the Department in coordination with the Directors of the subspecialty services.
- Oversees all Regulatory Compliance activities in the Department. They perform this function in close cooperation with the BMCBrighton Accreditation and Regulatory Manager.
- Supervises all risk management activities in the Department including case reviews and other activities requested by Patient Safety or any other departments across the hospital.
- Writes reports in a timely fashion and consults as appropriate with clinicians for the Department or from other disciplines.
- Supervises the Anesthesia Technicians and advice the Operations Manager on related issues.
- Leads the application process for capital purchases taking into account Department needs and input from other faculty and staff.
- Advises the Operations Manager in the management of noncapital supplies and soft goods.
- Upkeeps and optimizes the electronic anesthesia record in coordination with available IT resources.
- Serves in various Departmental committees as determined by the Chief.
- Assists and advice the Chief in addressing disciplinary or clinical quality issues related to anesthesia faculty and staff. Works closely with the Chief formulating coordinating and overseeing a reentry to clinical service plan when necessary. They should seek appropriate internal and external consultation as needed to conduct these functions.
- Assists the Administrative Director with credentialing issues of new and existing staff.
- Oversees Ongoing Professional Evaluation and Focused Professional Evaluation program.
- Establishes and directs an annual clinical competence program for all clinical staff of the Department.
- Oversees the orientation of new clinicians.
- Works with area leaders and Subspecialty Directors in the creation and implementation of Clinical Pathways and Protocols to advance and standardize anesthetic care. Ensures that departmental initiatives are aligned with those of the BMC Health System and Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine (BUCASM).
QUALIFICATIONS
- The VCCA is a faculty member in good standing with BUCASM and the BMC Health System.
- A respected clinician educator and a capable administrator.
- Holds an active medical license in Massachusetts be a diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
- Has an academic rank of Associate Professor or above.
