Job Description

Department Overview

The Doernbecher Pediatric and Fetal Echocardiography Lab is seeking a qualified and experiencedprofessional to join our team in a resource role. As the only fetal pediatric thoracic and pediatric transesophageal IAC/ICAEL certified lab in the State of Oregon the Doernbecher EchocardiographyLab serves Doernbecher Childrens Hospital as well as outreach sites located in Oregon.

Candidates must be able to perform the required duties listed below at a highly technical levelrequiring limited or no supervision. The sonographer will maintain a high standard of medical ethicsat all times and is self otivated. Applicant must work independently to produce high quality imaging on neonatal to adult age patients using a variety of noninvasive modalities including Transthoracic 3D and assist with transesophageal echocardiography. This lab supports many strategic Programs with Doernbecher Childrens Hospital including Pediatric Cardiology AmbulatoryCardiothoracic surgery NICU PICU Fetal Therapy/Perinatology Clinical Outreach as well as educational and research missions.

This position will be based in Portland OR on a variable basis. Coverage in outreach clinic locations isrequired. This position will be required to cover overnight call assignments multiple times per monthincluding weekends.

Must be experienced and registered in pediatric echocardiography.

Function/Duties of Position

Echo Procedures:

  • Determines and instructs patient in proper preparation for exam; explainsexamination process and procedure to patient; positions patient for eachexamination to maximize effectiveness of image and minimize patientdiscomfort; adjusts equipment controls; modifies each study during the examto demonstrate the anatomy physiology hemodynamics and/or pathologyaccurately; determines need for additional views depending on patientvariables or demonstrated pathology; manipulates transthoracic transducerby hand over diagnostic area in order to image cardiac structures andvisualize hemodynamic flow patterns as necessary; selects appropriate scanbased on significant functional and/or anatomical pathology; recordsrepresentative images for review by Cardiologist. Performs transthoracicechocardiography on pediatric patients to include the evaluation of complexcongenital heart lesions and pre/postoperative cardiac assessment; to include premature and micropremature infants on high frequencyventilators.
  • Provides transthoracic echocardiography on outreach pediatric patientsthroughout Oregon. During certain invasive procedures gives physicianmeasurements estimations angles and guidance. (These invasiveprocedures may include but not limited to; pericardial centesis balloon atrialseptostomy blade atrial septostomy balloon valvuloplasty. Assists physicianin the application of transesophageal and/or intra vascular ultrasound in thecardiac catheterization laboratory or surgical suites.

Records and Reports:

  • Schedules patients from phone or written physicians request; obtains clinicaldata from patient chart or referring physician; arranges digital images ofexam findings in logical sequence for patients permanent medical record;maintains patient files (e.g. records patient identification and correspondingexamination procedures); verbally reports summary of patients medicalhistory and pertinent exam findings to Cardiologist.

Miscellaneous:

  • Demonstrates echocardiography techniques and principles to assist studentsand Cardiology Fellows in performing the echocardiography exam; processesimages in digital format; performs routine cleaning and adjustments onmachines and reports any mechanical failures to supervisor; utilizeshazardous cleaning/sanitizing chemicals for esophageal probe; utilizescomputer/ultrasound machine data for additional analysis; performs periodicquality control tests to ensure proper operation of equipment; keeps abreast of new techniques and technological changes by attending workshops and seminars. Follows and utilizes research protocols.

Required Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in NonInvasive Cardiovascular Technology or Ultrasound from an approved and accredited program OR
  • Equivalent combination of education formal training and work experience.
  • Board Certification or eligibility for certification by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer. Sonographer license issued by Oregon Board of Medical Imaging. For positions on adult units certification from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) will be accepted in lieu of ARDMS certification. Active registration must be maintained with continuing medical education units (CMEs) on an ongoing basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two year experience in pediatric echocardiography with patients with complex congenital heart disease.
  • Fetal experience is a bonus.
  • Clinical experience with patients with complex congenital heart disease in a variety of settings including ambulatory NICU/PICU surgical suites and catheterization laboratory.

Additional Details

MondayFriday 8am to 5pm position based at Doernbecher Childrens Hospital Clinic but some required travel to other offsite locations within the State of Oregon as well as on call support & regional clinic coverage.

Constant exposure to usual hospital environmental conditions including possible exposure to blood and body fluids for which staff is provided education and protective equipment to minimize risk.
