Job Description
The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law preserve peace protect the people reduce fear and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police and by pioneering strategic innovation.
The Building Maintenance Section (BMS) plays a critical role in keeping Department Facilities operating safe for staff and visitors as it oversees the maintenance for over 250 Department Facilities Citywide. BMS manages multiple facilities renovations that support Department initiatives and unit relocations. BMS is comprised of uniform civilian trades professional and administrative staff.
In the Police Department under immediate supervision perform common unskilled laboring work requiring physical strength. Moves lifts and carries items of various weights and sizes. May utilize hand or powerdriven equipment in the performance of duties. May be required to operate motor vehicles in connection with the performance of duties. By assignment may oversee the daily activities of other laborers in the performance of their duties. Examples of work performed include but are not limited to:
Moving lifting and carrying heavy objects and materials;
May perform demolition work;
May make use of hand or powerdriven equipment in the performance of these duties;
Operate a forklift;
Assist in the provision of appropriate care for plantings and lawns as well as mowing pruning cultivating and maintaining lawns shrubs and trees.
