Description

Performs semiskilled work assisting in the installation maintenance and repair of electrical devices and equipment and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the moderate supervision of the Process Controls Supervisor/Foreman II.

Examples of Duties

  • Install maintain and repair a wide variety of electrical equipment and devices.
  • Install maintain and repair motors; controls; electrical wiring; and components up to 8.3kV single and three phase.
  • Troubleshoot electrical problems.
  • Perform simple and complex electrical and electronic tests.
  • Select electrical components and design simple electrical circuits.
  • Maintain records and prepare written reports and recommendations on electrical equipment and controls.
  • Perform troubleshooting tasks on electronic controls and components.
  • Install and maintain electronic devices.
  • Perform complex troubleshooting tasks on mechanical electrical pneumatic and combined motor control and alarm systems.
  • Troubleshoot maintain install and repair variable speed motor controllers and Programmable Logic Controllers.
  • Layout cut bend threads assembles and install conduit.
  • Soldering and electronic assembly of electronic components.


Upon completion of the apprenticeship program an Electrical Apprentice should be able to perform the essential functions of a Journeyman Electrician.

Typical Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid drivers license in the State of Michigan with a valid DOT Medical Card upon hire.
  • Complete 8000 hours of training under the City of Battle Creeks Apprenticeship program over five years.
  • Complete 576 hours of formal education under the City of Battle Creeks Apprenticeship program over five years.
  • Hold an active Apprenticeship Card through the State of Michigan.
  • Pass State of Michigan Journeymans test at the successful completion of the City of Battle Creeks Apprenticeship program to become a City of Battle Creek Electrical Journeyman.

Supplemental Information

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting bending reaching hand dexterity (grasping holding keyboarding repetitive movements) reading writing eyehand coordination seeing (near and/or far color depth field of vision) hearing using the telephone contact with government officials and the general public working overtime and working inside and alone. Work regularly requires exposure to the risk of electrical shock frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet humid conditions (nonweather) working in high precarious places exposure to fumes or airborne particles exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to extreme heat (nonweather); work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance heavy traffic).
