FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
This employee is responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program
for EC students in the total school environment as prescribed on the IEP and meeting
the duties of teaching as outlined in laws and policies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Designs the academic (basic) education program so it is consistent with the total educational philosophy of the district.
Prepares educational plans for each group of students based on individually assessed needs in accordance with the districts philosophy goals and objectives.
Uses appropriate assessment instruments pertinent to instructional areas to assess student progress.
Works in coordination with other basic education teachers and other departments in planning and developing the basic program.
Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
Provides varied instructional techniques and media through individual and/or group sessions designed to meet the educational social and emotional needs of the students.
Evaluates student progress on a regular basis and provides feedback to students and parents.
Supplies progress reports to school personnel and to parents of students as necessary and requested.
Refers those students who require further evaluation or followup services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.
Participates in the inschool staffing and screening processes as appropriate.
Assists in the selection of books equipment and other instructional materials
Provides for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading workshops seminars conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Understanding of typical language development.
Knowledge and understanding of developmental milestones for students with hearing loss in the following areas: language development (oral and sign) audition and selfadvocacy.
Conversational and educational skills in American Sign Language and Signed English.
Ability to address grade level curriculum at the students language level.
Ability to perform consistent and detailed data collection for progress monitoring towards IEP goals in the areas of language development audition selfadvocacy and academic achievement.
Familiarity with listening technology. Ability to monitor the use of said technology and troubleshoot as needed.
Ability to work collaboratively with school staff to meet each students general education and special education needs and targets.
Ability to train and work with support staff (educational sign language interpreters language facilitators teaching assistants) to establish schedules routines and to ensure adherence to district and state guidelines as well as individual student IEPS.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum: Bachelors degree in Deaf Education/Deaf Studies.
Desired: Strong sign language skills (ASL signed English)
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Deaf Education Teaching license required.
