About Boston Higashi School:

As a Special Education Teacher at BHS you will play a vital role in shaping the educational journey of students with ASD while working in a collaborative and dynamic environment.

JOB GOAL:

To develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) andacademic programs that empower students withAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) toachieve their fullest potential. This roleinvolves maintaining student records collaborating withspecial subject teachers andactively participating in lessons activities andspecial subject classes.

Responsibilities:

Instruct assigned students in all Individualized Education Plan (IEP) areas in collaboration with special subject teachers.

  1. Develop varied and interesting academic lessons following a BHS curriculum based on the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in order to enable students to reach individual IEP objectives.
  2. Develop and implement IEP goals and objectives for daily living skills behavior and academic areas.
  3. Present student progress and IEP goals and objectives to parent and school districts in the IEP meeting.
  4. Write comprehensive annual educational assessments based on daily observation and interactions in the areas of daily living skills behavior and academics.
  5. Maintain and develop students portfolio assessment based on the curriculum and individual IEP objectives.
  6. Develop portfolios to be submitted as alternative testing for students required to take the MCAS.
  7. Complete quarterly progress reports.
  8. Participate in all student activities including: extensive physical exercise and other various forms of exercise including lifting standing squatting and jogging one to three miles daily.
  9. Participate in activities/lessons/special subject classes along with students as a role model and motivator.
  10. Attend and participate in all inservices as well as training opportunities.
  11. Create monthly plans reflecting the schedule as well as the monthly academic topics.
  12. Communicate with parents on a regular basis (through communication notebook phone conversations individual conferences monthly reports and parent study meetings)
  13. Keeps an open line of communication with residential teachers regarding students.
  14. Refer third parties visitors and agencies to the Director of Special Education for the dissemination of school reports student information and school policies. Maintain professionalism and confidentiality with parents and others.
  15. Attend all BHS school events and participate in assigned committees.
  16. Attend morning afternoon and division meetings daily.
  17. Communicate clearly and effectively with Division team members during daily meetings.
  18. Perform duties as assigned by direct supervisors Master Teacher Division Directors Special Education Director and/or Director of Programming.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree in Education.

  • Teaching Certification or actively working toward certification.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder or similar populations.

  • Familiarity withDaily Life Therapymethodology (training provided if needed).

Additional Skills:

  • Initiative and excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
