Job Description

Substitute Nursing duties at school sites where needed. Must meet all state licensing requirements.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision provide health services program for the evaluation improvement and protection of the health of pupils and school personnel in accordance with state law and district policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The list of Duties and Responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.

Contacts parents paramedics ambulance and hospital in emergencies and maintains accompanying records.

  1. Conducts screening of vision hearing dental and physical appraisal in accordance with Nevada Revised Statutes.
  2. Assumes responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.
  3. Maintains uptodate cumulative health records on all students.
  4. Identifies pupils with health needs that interfere with learning.
  5. Disseminates information to students and staff in recognizing and reporting health deviations.
  6. Provides information to pupils parents and school personnel to plan action for minimizing the health problems of pupils.
  7. Serves as a resource person to district staff for health related issues including screening for special education placement.
  8. Arranges for the instruction of school personnel in administering emergency care.
  9. Administers first aid in accordance with district policies.
  10. Exercises judgment regarding the disposition of pupils who become ill or who are injured at school.
  11. Serves as liaison between community agencies and the school.
  12. Participates in inservice training programs.
  13. Instructs staff on universal isolation procedures annually to insure staff safety from contagious diseases.
  14. Assumes other tasks as assigned by Certified School Nurse.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Involves assisting the school nurse in working with mentally physically emotionally and multiple handicapped students. Also involves effective health office management.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Position Expectations):

  1. Knowledge of basic first aid CPR/AED and Universal Precautions.
  2. Ability to attend and successfully complete annual medication assistance training and tests.
  3. Ability to participate and complete initial and ongoing training and staff development.
  4. Ability to prepare organize and maintain accurate health records or reports.
  5. Ability to interpret health and safety standards.
  6. Ability to handle emergency situations without supervision and make sound health care decisions.
  7. Ability to learn explain and apply procedures.
  8. Ability to learn and apply laws rules and regulations relating to health activities.
  9. Ability to maintain security of confidential information.
  10. Ability to learn to use computers and software applications related to the health office.
  11. Ability to determine when to act independently and when to refer medical situations to School Nurse and/or administrator.
  12. Ability to work cooperatively with School Nurse employees students parents/guardians and other medical personnel.
  13. Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
  14. Possess physical and mental stamina commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education Training and Experience:

  • Graduation from an Associate of Nursing Program or a Licensed Practical Nurse Program

Licenses and Certificates:

  1. Current licensee as a Registered Nurse.
  2. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate from the American Heart Association American Red Cross or other similar organization. Certification must be maintained for the duration of the assignment. Certification training must be inperson and include a handson component. Online only courses will not be accepted.
  3. CPR and First Aide Instructor per American Heart Association (completion required upon hire).
  4. Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Recent hospital experience preferred.DOCUMENT(S) REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION:
  1. College transcript or other equivalent.
  2. Current license in the state of Nevada or ability to become licensed as a: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN); or Registered Nurse (RN) with a two 2 year or three 3 year degree.
  3. Current First Aid certificate as indicated above.
  4. A valid drivers license that allows the applicant/employee to legally operate a motor vehicle in Nevada.
  5. Current CPR/First Aid Instructor certificate as indicated above (May complete upon hire).
  6. Specific documented evidence of training and experience to satisfy qualifications.

EXAMPLES OF ASSIGNED WORK AREAS:

Elko County School District schools (i.e. health offices playgrounds cafeterias classrooms locker rooms) etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Strength: Medium/HeavyExert force 50100 lbs. occasionally; 2545 lbs. frequently; 1020 lbs. constantly. May involve significant standing walking carrying pushing and pulling.

Physical Demands: Frequent walking sitting standing pushing pulling climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching reaching handling and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Vision: Frequent near and far acuity depth perception and focal length change. Occasional color vision and peripheral vision.

Environmental Conditions: Exposure to climatecontrolled office settings and to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud for occasional to frequent time periods.

Hazards: Furniture playground/office equipment communicable diseases chemicals and fumes (as related to specific assignment) and power/hanrated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).

EXAMPLES OF EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES USED TO PERFORM TASKS:

Thermometers splints first aid supplies catheters and other drainage tubes blood glucose monitoring supplies blood pressure cuff stethoscope vision screeners audiometers (hearing screening) computers telephones copy machines etc.
