Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
- Associates Degree BA/BS preferred or comparable experience
- Receipt of a passing grade on the practical examination in signing for the New Hampshire Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (NHEIPA) as specified in #4 through 18:
- One of the following entry level requirements:
- A certificate of completion from an educational interpreter training program and educational interpreter preparation program;
- Educational interpreter certification from another state whose standards are equivalent to Ed 507.35;
- Hold a current national certification from either National Offices of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD); or
- Receive a passing grade on the written NHEIPA exam as defined in #4 through 18.
- The ability to identify resources that serve students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH)
- A knowledge of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Conduct.
- The ability to establish an environment allowing for effective interpreting and transliterating in a wide variety of educational settings.
Specific Core Function:
TheInterpreter will assist the educational staff in the overall educational process of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students with whom s/he works. This will be accomplished primarily through:
- the facilitation of communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and others and
- the tutorial assistance to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in developing communication academic and other skills.
Of prime importance to theInterpreteris the ability to be very flexible and to be prepared to work with a variety of students in a variety of settings which change according to the needs of the program and students.
Responsibilities of the Interpreter:
- Facilitate communication within an educational environment between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and others including teachers other service providers and peers.
- Relay information accurately and intelligibly to and from the Deaf students and others as needed.
- Become familiar with Deaf students preferred modes of communication in order to assure appropriate interpreting/tutoring.
- Prepare for work assignments by becoming familiar with the subject area lessons content vocabulary outlines etc. of various classes within which one works.
Specified Length/Hours of Position:
This is an affiliated position in theMESPA unit which follows the school calendar. Salary is set at Grade 18A $27.40/hour 6.5 hours per day 32.5 hours per week.
