JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL/SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR

JOB GOALS: The Assistant Principal/Special Education Coordinator provides administrative support to the building

principal in the areas of Curriculum & Instruction Special Education Oversight Staff Supervision & Evaluation Building Operations and Student and Family Engagement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Masters Degree or higher from an accredited college or university with concentration in Administration Supervision and/or Curriculum.
  2. Licensure or immediate eligibility to acquire licensure as a Principal/Assistant Principal and Special Education Administrator by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  3. At least five years of experience as a teacher related service provider or administrator in a public school.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  1. Knowledge of current practices in curriculum and pedagogy including implementation of curriculum and evaluation of teaching practice.
  1. Demonstrated professional knowledge of antiracist and culturally responsive teaching and leadership practices.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of Special Education laws and regulations and team processes.
  3. Knowledge of developmentally appropriate programs interdisciplinary curriculum and integrated Special Education programs.
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills and tangible evidence of ability to proactively respond to the needs of students and families.



PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

  1. Assume leadership of the school in the absence of the principal or other Assistant Principal
  2. Collaborate with the principal to establish and maintain rules and procedures for student and staff safety.
  3. Conduct periodic inspections of the school building and grounds and report needed work and repairs to the appropriate persons.
  4. Effectively implement school and district action plans in crisis and emergency situations.
  5. Participate in curriculum development activities commensurate with school and district goals.
  6. Collaborate with District leadership department heads and teachers in order to support the implementation of programming and curriculum.
  7. Emphasize student academic achievement inclusive educational environments and social and emotional development as the primary outcomes of the school program.
  8. Works with students parents and staff to develop appropriate programmatic plans to meet the needs of all students and provide early intervention when necessary.
  9. Provide leadership to the Special Education teachers related service providers and paraprofessionals in the school.
  10. Act as the 504 Plan Coordinator for the school and oversee all aspects of 504 implementation in accordance with regulations and district procedures.
  11. Collaborate with the principal to develop and maintain positive staff morale.
  12. Implement the schools Discipline Code of Conduct and work with the principal to make revisions when appropriate.
  13. Maintain high visibility and accessibility in the school.
  14. Assist the principal in identifying planning and implementing staff development programs in accordance with assessed needs.
  15. Collaborate with the principal on the educator evaluation system and assume responsibility for some evaluations of teachers and other building staff.
  16. Assist the principal on hiring and other personnel decisions.
  17. Assist the Principal with communications to stakeholders: Students Parents Teachers and Staff and the community.
  18. Engage in relevant professional development activities.

SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR

  1. Hires supervises and evaluates team chairs related service providers teachers and teaching assistants in conjunction with the building principal and district administration
  2. Facilitates or provides training and professional development opportunities for general education and special education staff in areas such as specialized instructional strategies and accommodations
  3. Oversees caseload assignments schedules and buildingbased due process compliance.
  4. Coordinates departmental meeting time
  5. Management of Programs/District Procedures:
    1. Supervises specialized programs and curriculum in programs
    2. Provides general fiscal oversight for specialized programs
    3. Works closely with the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Financial Manager in preparing budgets for special education programs out of district placements.
    4. Assists in developing budgets for special education programs and services
    5. Works with principals and team chairs to provide a continuum of services.
    6. Leads the development of indistrict programming in coordination with staff district leadership and outside consultants.
  6. Attends team meetings when necessary
  7. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal and Assistant Superintendent for Student Services

REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Assistant Superintendent for Student Services

SUPERVISES: Classroom teachers related service providers and support staff in the

building.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 205 Days in accordance with contract between the

Arlington School Committee and the Arlington Administrators Association
