SUMMARY: The school nurse plays a vital role in maintaining the health and wellbeing of students and staff. They provide first aid manage medications monitor communicable diseases promote a safe and healthy school environment and maintaining all student health records attendance records or other files and records required of health services. In addition to direct student care the school nurse serves as a key liaison between parents administration teachers and staff ensuring consistent and clear communication about student health needs medical conditions and overall school health policies. Effective communication organization and collaboration are essential in providing seamless care and fostering a supportive school community.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Student Health Care & First Aid - Provide immediate first aid emergency care and basic life support to students and staff in accordance with school policy and health guidelines.
- Administer prescribed and overthecounter medications maintaining proper documentation and communication with families.
- Monitor and support students with chronic health conditions (e.g. asthma diabetes severe allergies) ensuring care plans are followed.
- Contact parents or emergency services 911 when further medical attention is required.
- Monitor students for signs of communicable diseases (e.g. head lice pink eye flu COVID19 and consult with the district nurse as needed.
- Assist in field trip planning by ensuring proper medication collection and handoff to designated staff.
- Maintain accurate realtime charting of all health office visits including time in/out and relevant details.
Health Screenings & Records Maintenance - Conduct annual vision and hearing screenings; refer findings to the district nurse for followup.
- Maintain and update immunization records emergency contact information and student health histories in compliance with state and district requirements.
- Track healthrelated attendance issues and excessive absenteeism.
- Document student height and weight during screenings and log results.
- Compile health concern lists for students with special medical needs.
- Send notices to classrooms regarding communicable illnesses when appropriate.
Health Office Management & Compliance - Keep health office surfaces cots and supplies clean and sanitized daily with a deep clean at the end of each day.
- Organize and restock medical supplies first aid kits and ice packs regularly.
- Scan and organize archived health records during lowtraffic periods.
- Ensure health services are in compliance with HIPAA FERPA and all state/district health guidelines.
Health Education Communication & Prevention - Educate students and staff on basic health practices including hygiene and illness prevention.
- Provide guidance to students in understanding and managing chronic health needs.
- Collaborate with school administrators teachers and families to promote a healthy learning environment.
- Communicate consistently and professionally with parents staff and administrators regarding student health concerns medications and accommodations.
Additional Responsibilities - Report student concerns related to drug use neglect dental care or abuse to appropriate personnel.
- Cover the front desk or support Student Services during absences as needed.
- Assist in ordering health supplies and maintaining an orderly workspace.
- Minimize personal phone use during work hours (music permitted); prioritize student engagement and care.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) required; Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) preferred.
- First Aid and Basic Life Support certification required.
- Knowledge of school health regulations recordkeeping procedures and emergency care protocols.
- Proficiency in clerical and computerbased documentation systems.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
- Compassionate studentcentered approach with excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to hear speak and effectively communicate in English.
- Sit stand or walk for extended periods throughout the school day.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity for computer use and health assessments.
- Flexibility to respond quickly in emergency situations and adapt to a dynamic school environment.
