POSITION TITLE: Summer Assistant/Tutor (temporary)
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHPS:
Reports to: METS Director METS Associate Director
Summary of Position:
The Mills Institute at Northeastern University Educational Talent Search (METS) TRIO Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. METS assists lowincome first generation middle school and high school students in the City of Oakland by disseminating information on the college preparation process. The Summer Enrichment Program will provide academic instruction in core subjects: English Sciences and Mathematics. METS will also provide courses and workshops exploring various topics: Life Skills Study Skills College Preparation Career Exploration and Cultural Awareness.
Summer Enrichment Program Description
The METS Program offers a fourweek summer academic enrichment program for students entering grades 6th12th. The METS summer program will be conducted at Life Academy a local high school in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). Staff orientations will likely take place June 3rd 5th. Instruction for the METS Summer Program is scheduled to begin Monday June 9th and continues through Thursday July 3rd. The daily schedule is approximately 8:30am2:00pm Monday Friday. The student/parent orientation on the evening of Wednesday June 4th is a mandatory event for all summer staff. Exact times to be announced prior to hiring.
The Mills Institute Educational Talent Search Program is currently seeking 24 highly motivated knowledgeable creative engaging student focused experienced Summer Assistant/Tutors to support the program activities and academic component. Academic courses will be taught by instructors to Oakland students in grades 6th12th. We seek Summer Assistant/Tutors who possess the skills to addresses students needs interests abilities and curiosities in various subjects and activities offered throughout the summer program.
Each course will be defined by:
Small classes up to 20 students)
Daily inclass instruction group work realworld application of concepts taught quizzes
Pre & post assessments
Essential Job Functions:
Monitoring daily attendance
Support students with work completion
Student lunch time supervision
Prep materials for instructors
Supervise students on weekly field trips
Demonstrate knowledge of and support of METS mission vision value statements standards policies and procedures operating instructions confidentiality standards and the code of ethical behavior
Participate in METS weekly staff meetings
Attend staff orientation/planning sessions and program activities.
Prepare students for End of Summer Showcase
Knowledge of:
Knowledge of subject matter and skill acquisition in various academic courses suitable for 6th12th grade students
Knowledge of child/adolescent development and different learning styles (preferred)
Skills/Abilities:
Missiondriven and passionate about programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Excellent written oral and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated experiencesolving problems including conflict resolution.
Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure maintaining a professional composure when dealing with common problems that occur in events and classroom settings.
Education and Training:
Minimum of a Sophomore year status in college coursework.
Minimum 2 years direct working relationship/or tutoring lowincome firstgeneration collegebound students.(preferred)
Strong preference given to candidates with experience working with Oakland youth.
Physical Mental and Environmental Demands:
Requires passing a background check.
