Job Description

The Position

The Port of Portland is hiring an Electrical Engineering Intern!

We invite aspiring Electrical Engineering students to take advantage of handson learning working on cuttingedge projects and gaining invaluable mentorship at the Port of Portland. Our Electrical Engineering Internship is designed to provide you with a dynamic experience and contribute to the success of the new airport terminal!

Your role:Its simple ask questions and learn on the job! Primary assignment includes researching documenting and populating databases with information about electrical equipment. Works with talented professionals on cool airport projects!

Tobe considered for this intern position you must be a current student enrolled in a Portlandarea school for the duration of employment.Spring 2025 graduates will not be eligible for this internship unless documentation of continued educational classes (graduate school documentation related to the field) can be provided at the time of application.

Duration: Expected sunset date on or around May 30 2026 with fulltime work during school breaks and parttime during the school year.

Essential Job Duties

  • Work under the direction of a Professional Engineer (P.E. to obtain information regarding electrical equipment.
    • Research and document product data (manufacture/models/ratings/options) installation details (taking photos and creating documentation) determination of equipment history (when installed last modified gather project information) and update panelboard schedules.
    • Become familiar with the construction process and be introduced to the various types of construction documentation available for the construction and operation of systems.
  • Become familiar with the National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements regarding Arc Flash Equipment Labeling requirements.
    • Compile labeling information create databases and work with the overseeing P.E to determine which information needs to be updated.
  • Assist other Engineering staff as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university and seeking a degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Student must also provide current unofficial transcript at time of application.
  • Maintenance of a minimum 2.5 grade point average and continued enrollment in classes pertinent to the internship is required.
  • Experience with Autodesk is preferred.
  • Must successfully pass and maintain clearance of a comprehensive Criminal History Records Check and a Security Threat Assessment for a PDX Security Badge are required.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills:
  • Competent level skills in Microsoft Suite.
  • Organization and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Focuses on safety improvements and complies with safety and health policies and procedures.
  • Shows the utmost respect for others and is a proven team player.
  • Works in a team environment and follows directions.
  • Handle multiple tasks with limited supervision.
  • Carry/handle moderately heavy 2550 lbs. drawings and other documents.
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing differences among individuals and possess a passion for being inclusive.

Supplemental and Selection Information

SELECTION PROCESSsubject to change):

  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of education training and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources the week of April 22 2025.

  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials including any responses to the supplemental questionnaire.

  3. Our goal is to schedule panel interviews with candidates that successfully passed the SME evaluation step approximately the week of April 29 2025. The successful candidate will be notified after interviews are complete with a tentative start date around May or June 2025 after final exams.
