Job Description

Summary

The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a qualified Medical Assistant II to work with the Division of General Surgery in their multispecialty clinic in Sugar Land. This position will perform patient care responsibilities provide clerical/administrative support in a clinical setting and provide guidance to entry level Medical Assistants.

The position is located at 1327 Lake Pointe Parkway Sugar Land TX 77478.

Job Duties

  • Supports the providers in a multispecialty clinic setting.
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs and venipuncture (blood draws).
  • Schedules patient tests procedures and appointments.
  • Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post visit followups.
  • Manages inbasket messages and coordinates incoming patient referrals.
  • Enters orders for patient tests and obtains proper paperwork.
  • Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records obtaining lab/xray reports hospital notes and referral information.
  • Takes inventory of clinic supplies and orders supplies.
  • Collects patient history performs medication reconciliation notes the primary complaint/reason for patients visit and enters information in the electronic medical record.
  • Sets up instruments and equipment for Physician.
  • Administers medication under direction / order of a supervising Physician.
  • Instructs patients on general care and medical procedures.
  • Maintains patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Assists with precepting / orienting of new Medical Assistant staff.
  • Delivers staff education clinical inservices and/or participates in clinical staff meetings based on the needs of the department and as appropriate to scope of practice for an MA.
  • Supports the clinics / departments compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and clinical champion for areas of expertise within your specialty and as appropriate to scope of practice for an MA.
  • Conducts performance Improvement activities that support the clinics / departments goals for quality patient experience patient safety and/or efficiency.
  • Sorts and distributes clinic mail and medical records to the appropriate clinic personnel.
  • Performs other jobrelated duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA AMT ARMA NCCTNHA NAHP or AMCA).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Epic EHR.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
