Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Curatorial Assistant position. The Curatorial Assistant is a parttime casual position without benefits starting at $22.00/hour commensurate with experience. Given Amhersts distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The Curatorial Assistant will support the research and development of upcoming exhibitions and collection research at the Mead principally through assistance with administrative curatorial duties. Administrative duties may include research and tracking of loan requests; assistance creating tracking and managing production schedules; object research; support with label writing and editing; and other tasks needed to assist with the management of checklists exhibition designs and interpretive plans. The Curatorial Assistant will report to the Meads Director of Curatorial Affairs and work closely with other Mead curators the Meads Collections Manager and Preparator and in dialogue with the Meads education team and Director.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Administrative tasks associated with the research and development of exhibitions including the organization of checklists gallery texts labels and images; support with label writing and editing; may work on museum publications including obtaining images reproduction permissions and compiling bibliographical information
Assistance managing a production schedule for exhibitions and communication with Mead staff as well as occasional communication with external vendors artists and other project partners
Collection research including potential loans and acquisitions
Qualifications:
BA in art history museum studies or a related field; MAin art history museum studies or other related field preferred
2 years of experience in a gallery or museum setting particularly with curatorial experience
Experience managing exhibitions including traveling exhibitions and working with individual lenders
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; grant writing experience is a plus
Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet scheduled deadlines
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Google Workspace Zoom Asana and basic office skills
Commitment to or experience working with diverse communities
Successful completion of required reference and background checks
