Job Description

Student Health and Wellbeing (SHWB) Mental Health Services at Johns Hopkins University seeks an energetic organized and motivated Mental Health Services (MHS) Clinician Liaison to Undergraduate Residences and Center for Recreationto work in a dynamic and fastpaced environment focused on delivering innovative mental healthcare and supporting the wellbeing of a diverse community of learners.


This role will be embedded in the Ralph OConnor Center for Recreation and WellBeing and undergraduate residential spaces while maintaining a strong connection to the Mental Health Services interdisciplinary team. The unique nature of this role supports strong collaboration with nonclinical case management and athletic mental performance staff to support student athletes as well as opportunities to cocreate outreach and mental health programs with partners in recreation and in the undergraduate residences. As with all staff within Mental Health Services this clinician will operate as a generalist who provides a full range of clinical services including initial consultations individual goaldirected therapy workshops groups and crisis intervention.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • This positions direct clinical service responsibilities will be split between the Ralph OConnor Center for Recreation and Wellbeing and space in the undergraduate residences and may provide some virtual services in Washington D.C. depending on clinic needs.

Direct Clinical Service 6065 based on demand and clinic needs)

  • Creates a warm and welcoming clinical environment where clients feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal academic and professional goals.
  • Provides direct clinical services including goaloriented approaches to initial consultations intake assessments singlesession therapy individual counseling group and relationship counseling and crisis intervention.
  • Utilizes both flexible and goaloriented approaches to individual treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy dialectical behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy often in collaboration with treating psychiatrists.
  • Collaborates with providers within SHWB as an interdisciplinary treatment team including therapists psychiatric providers primary care clinicians case management and disability services staff.
  • Collaborates with nonclinical case manager and athletics mental performance staff to provide clinical interventions to scholarathletes.
  • Provides dropin and singlesession interventions to undergraduate students in oncampus residences and supports transition and referrals to other clinical services within the Mental Health Services portfolio.
  • Consults as appropriate with providers in the community to facilitate continuity of care.


Outreach 2530

  • Develops and delivers psychoeducational workshops and other presentations for JHU students and learners with a special emphasis on scholarathletes and undergraduate students in oncampus residences.
  • Develops and facilitates opportunities for informal interactions with students to reduce barriers to counseling which may include offering dropin and chat hours attending student events and participating in a range of studentled and studentfocused programs.
  • Serve as a key liaison for scholarathletes helping them connect with mental health resources and receive referrals from both athletes and all undergraduate students seeking mental health services in embedded spaces.
  • Maintains a visible presence through participation in outreach and educational activities including resource fairs heritage events and community activities.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of mental health resource needs for scholarathletes and undergraduates living in oncampus residential spaces through collaborations with students campus partners and the broader community of JHU to help reduce barriers to counseling and mental health services.
  • Collaborates with the athletics department to develop and execute mental health screenings for scholarathletes by NCAA guidelines.
  • Consults with oncampus residence life staff to support programs and interventions for students living in oncampus housing.
  • Contributes to content for Mental Health Services social media and website.
  • Works collaboratively with the departments of Athletics Recreation and Physical Education and OnCampus Living to develop a network of support services to proactively address the holistic wellbeing needs of scholarathlete and residential undergraduate populations.


Collaborative and Other Activities 1020

  • Remains abreast of current literature and research on student behavioral health and evidencebased intervention strategies.
  • Participates in Mental Health Services staff meetings events and staff activities to maintain close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams that provide services to JHU student and learner populations.
  • Contributes to the professional development of trainees and SHWB staff through the provision of didactic training and seminars.
  • Participates in case consultation student risk management peer chart reviews and other departmental committees as directed.
  • Participates in clinical training programs; licensed psychologists will enter the pool of available individual supervisors for the APAapproved psychology internship training program after 2 years of postlicensure experience.
  • Works collaboratively with campus partners to support both the clinical and programmatic needs of students and learners.
  • Participates in MHS recruitment and hiring processes.
  • Completes documentation and administrative duties in accordance with MHS policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Special Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to create and develop new programs with a level of independence and initiative.
  • Experience independently executing psychoeducational presentations programs and events for a wide audience.
  • Specialized training interest and/or experience working with student athletes.
  • Experience working in embedded locations with limited onsite administrative support.
  • Clinical experience in a university setting is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with scholarathletes is strongly preferred.


Additional Information (Working Conditions)

  • Schedule
    • This is a 37.5 hour/week position. Two evening clinics per week (until 7pm) may be required; additional flexible schedule options may be available including evenings and weekends/alternative schedules
    • This position requires occasional evening and weekend work dependent on the programmatic needs of the University and for activities during the academic year (orientation special events etc.
    • This is a 5 day per week inperson position
    • This is a 12month position yearround position
  • This position is designated as a Required Attendance Employee designated as vital to the operation of a work group so may be required to work during a university closure in response to operational needs.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in counseling psychology or social work from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years postgraduate clinical experience.
  • Independently licensed as a mental health provider in primary required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description prior to start date; licensure in additionally required jurisdiction(s) required within 6 months of hire.

Substitution/Equivalency

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D. in psychology from an APA accredited program and completion of an APA internship. If eligibility is based on a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D. in psychology postgrad experience is not required to meet the minimum qualifications. Recent doctoral graduate hires must obtain licensure as a psychologist in a minimum of one required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description within 12 months of hire; licensure in additional required jurisdictions required within 2 years of hire.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D. from an accredited program.
  • Licensed as a psychologist in required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description or licenseeligible. (must obtain licensure in required jurisdiction(s) within 6 months of hire)
  • Bilingual proficiency is highly desirable.
