AbouttheWorkUnit:
The Wan research laboratory in the department of Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University investigates the molecular mechanisms that drive viral life cycles in host do this by either infecting cells with live viruses or for higher biosafety level viruses using plasmidbased modelling systems; we then study these cells to obtain molecular insights into the hostpathogen interactions. The primary techniques used in the lab include molecular biology molecular virology live cell fluorescence microscopy and cryoelectron tomography (cryoET). While our lab has a strong focus on methods development we also incorporate a range of biochemical and biophysical approaches in pursuing our biological aims. Thework unitismadeupof facultyresearch staffpostdoctoralfellowsandgraduatestudents.
KeyFunctionsandExpectedPerformance:AssistsinResearchandDevelopment:
- Researches and collects data using appropriate lab experiments procedures and techniques
- Preparationofbuffersandreagents
- Production and maintenance of DNA vectorsmammalian cell lines and virus stocks
- Production and purification of virus and viruslike particles using mammalian cell culture
- Preparation of viruses viruslike particles and virusinfected cells for cryoET
- Collects analyzes and interprets data with assistance of other members of the laboratory
- Writesandupdateslaboratoryprotocols
- Reports on status of research activities in oral and written formats
- Assemblesandcompileresearchdataforpresentationand/orreports
Maintenance
- Conducts generallabmaintenance
- Assists in set up operation and maintenance oflaboratoryequipment includingbutnotlimitedto biosafety cabinets incubatorscentrifuges etc.
- Properstorageandmaintenanceof DNA andvirusstocks
Performsadministrativeduties
- Monitors inventory of supplies and assists with ordering
- Participateinweeklyandbimonthlymeetingstodiscussprojectprogress
- Othertasksasdirectedbysupervisor
- Thispositiondoesnothavesupervisoryresponsibility.
- Thepositionreportsadministrativelyand functionallytothePI.
- ABachelorsdegreein biochemistrybiological scienceschemistryor relatedfield fromanaccreditedinstitutionofhighereducationisnecessary.
- Knowledge and experience with mammalian cell culture and protein expression is preferred.
- Knowledge of virus expression and purification is preferred.
- Knowledge of electron microscopy is preferred.
- Knowledge of fluorescence microscopy is preferred.
- Experience with organization inventory and record keeping is preferred.
- Excellent organizational and communications skills (both verbal and written) are preferred.
