Job Description
Primary Purpose and Function:
Demonstrate professional behavior with a teambased mentality to ensure that all products produced and harvested by Walters Gardens are produced to the highest quality standard in an efficient safe and economical way.
Knowledge and Skills:
- 35 years related work
- Have or ability to obtain a pesticide applicator license
- Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus
- Computer skills in Microsoft office preferred
- Basic organizational and math skills a plus
- Ability to lift heavy objects
- Some long days and weekends required based on seasonality of position
- Ability to obtain WG Hilo operator license
- Ability to operate equipment (spray tractors tractor and fertilizer spreader truck and trailer etc.
Requirements
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Quality Walks
- Conduct weekly/biweekly quality walks on all field product to monitor and collect growth and plant health data (including above and below ground plant growth measurements abiotic data and health data)
- Take photos of the plants at different growth stages to supplement growth data
- Take photos of any disease pest or abiotic issues in the crop to supplement health data
- Analyze growth and health data by contributing to a database for yeartoyear crop comparison
- Interpret quality walk data in season to ensure the crops growth is on track
Scouting
- Use Integrated Pest Management techniques for monitoring plant health issues and applying appropriate remedies
- Be able to identify different disease pest and abiotic issues in different crops and report all findings to the IPM supervisor
- Be willing to collaborate with other coworkers and the IPM supervisor on the treatment and preventative options for any issues in the crop
- Maintain organized and detailed records of scouting findings
- Take necessary samples and send them to the appropriate lab for analysis
Noxious Management
- Use Integrated Pest Management techniques for monitoring and correctly identifying noxious weeds
- Manage records and maps of noxious presence
- Help educate field staff about noxious weeds and proper identification
- Contribute to an action plan to control all noxious sightings
- Plan organize and apply appropriate remedies for noxious control
Soil and Tissue sampling
- Assist in developing a schedule for soil sampling farm fields
- Taking samples and sending to lab for analysis
- Test field pH and EC in house and contribute to a database
- Take necessary tissue samples for fertility and send them to the lab for analysis
Perform pesticide and fertilizer R and D trials
- Assist IPM Supervisor by identifying R and D trials
- Assist IPM Supervisor with setting up and carrying out R and D trials
- Complete organize and maintain R and D notes
- Continually search for new pesticide or fertilizer chemistry/technology to improve crop yield
Chemical and Fertilizer Applications
- Assist in chemical applications as needed
- Assist in applying fertilizer as needed
- Assist in maintaining field pesticide records in accordance with State and Federal Laws
Winter work
- Due to the seasonality of field work a period of approximately December 15 to March 15 will be spent helping other departments based on demand of need in departments and experience of the individual
Team Responsibilities
- Communicate any problems or concerns to appropriate manager immediately
- Provide assistance during the Fall digging season as needed
- Complete other duties as assigned
