ARET 1612 Structural Technology 2 030

Credits: 3 credits
Delivery: Campus

This course explores the concepts of statical equilibrium strength of materials and related building code requirements as applied to basic structural and mechanical design problems. The course introduces force analysis of trusses and frames centroids moments of inertia and shear force and bending moment diagrams. Students examine the stress and strain effects of axial torsional bending and shear forces and calculate the deflections of beams and the effect of slenderness on columns. Students also learn fundamental concepts in Part 4 and Part 9 of the British Columbia Building Code.

The sessional instructor will be responsible for only one section of the seminar for this class. Class time is three hours per week. The instructor must also be available at predetermined times during the week to answer student questions outside of the scheduled class times. Marking of all seminar assignments and quizzes for the course as well as periodic meetings with other ARET faculty is also required.



Requirements

The successful candidate will be a Civil or Building Technologist Intern Architect Registered Architect Engineer in Training or Professional Engineer. Some teaching experience or teaching assistant experience would be an asset.

Candidates are encouraged to apply for several or all sessional positions being offered in the ARET department for the fall and winter semesters.
