The Work Unit

The Prevention Services Divisionworks with public and private partners across Colorado to improve the health of all Coloradans. Division professionals develop review implement and evaluate public health interventions proven to promote healthy living prevent chronic disease protect against injury and ensure access to health care and opportunities for a healthy lifestyle. The Division is committed to the professional development collaborative effort and sustained wellness of its workforce. The Prevention Services Division is actively building a workforce reflective of the diverse communities we serve. The Division strives to understand the needs of Colorados communities and encourages contributions of stakeholders in identifying and solving public health problems. The Office of Suicide Prevention serves as the lead entity for suicide prevention intervention supports and postvention efforts in Colorado collaborating with communities statewide to reduce suicide through health policy legislation public awareness and education training assessments and intervention programs.

The Position

This position operates independently leading suicide prevention initiatives related to lethal means safety working
age men and service members veterans and their families serving as the Office of Suicide Preventions subject matter expert for these initiatives. The position works within existing guidelines to provide technical assistance to grantees and stakeholders working on suicide prevention initiatives; provides staff support and leadership to the Colorado Service Members Veterans and Their Families Workgroup Governors Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members Veterans and Their Families; coordinates the Colorado Gun Shop Project and other lethal means safety efforts for suicide prevention; and coordinates efforts for Man Therapy and Operation Veteran Strong.


Additionally this position collaborates with other state injury and violence prevention programs in PSD and CDPHE including the Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Program coordination is vital for success in this position to anticipate and analyze the impact of decisions. This position uses strong organizational and communication skills and is responsible for building and maintaining relationships at the community and state level in order to support the programs.

Minimum Qualifications Substitutions Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

An applicant may meet the minimum qualifications for this job in one of two ways: They may qualify through their work experience alone or through a combination of education and work experience.

ExperienceOnly:
Six 6 years of relevant experience in prevention and/or education program planning or evaluation including providing technical assistance facilitation or guidance to partners.

OR
Education and Experience:
A combination of related education graduation from an accredited college or university in health psychology sociology social work public policy public administration public health
or a closely related field ANDrelevant experience in prevention and/or education program planning or evaluation including providing technical assistance facilitation or guidance to partnersequivalent to Six 6 years.

Preferred Qualifications and Essential Competencies
The preferred experience competencies and abilities are highly desirable for this position and will be considered in selecting the successful candidate:

1 Experience with suicide prevention intervention and/or postvention programs.
2 Experience understanding and synthesizing the needs of firearm communities and communicating to broad partners around lethal means safety and firearms.
3)Experience implementing equity programs strategies activities and practices in organizational or community settings related to lethal means safety
4 Experiencing with firearms gun shops and/or ranges either as a firearm owner or professionally
5 Experience managing conflicts and diverse opinions of partners around lethal means safety and firearms.
6 Experience with programs strategies activities and practices serving the service members veterans and their families (SMVF) community and/or personal experience as a service member veteran or military family.
7 Experience with project management which included managing/writing competitive grants managing budgets and contracts.
8 Experience synthesizing complex research data or evaluation measures into understandable and usable resources.
9 Experience and ability to follow timelines to ensure work is complete and delivered by deadlines.
10 Strong and strategic communication skills (Oral and Written) and attention to detail.
