General Summary



This Street Maintenance Inspectorposition helps to assure quality work from contractors working on City streets or within the Citys rightofway. Performs responsible technical work inspecting street maintenance and construction work performed by private contractors for specification compliance to local and state requirements. Position also performs field inspections for both Erosion and Sediment (E&S) and stormwater compliance. Does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is performed independently with diverse functional areas and more specialization and ability to consult on the work of others. Depending on assignment reports to the Erosion & Sediment/VSMP Program Manager.

The preferred hiring range for this position is between $21.00 $27.00 an hour $48680.00 $56160.00 Annually).As of March 28 2024 this position is in theLabor and Trades bargaining unitin accordance with the CitysCollective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22128. Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education experience and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement which will take effect on July 1 2025.

Minimum Qualifications:


Skills:Thorough knowledge of street milling and paving practices concrete formwork and placement subgrade preparation and techniques materials equipment hazards and necessary safety precautions relating to related work. Ability to establish effective working relationships with contractors state officials property owners and others to ensure satisfactory compliance with specification and standards; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports; ability to work independently. Proficiency in street infrastructure requirements and relevant contractual issues. Must be knowledgeable in the requirements of ADA regulations as it pertains to work within the ROW. Knowledgeable and able to manage third party testing/inspection firms as applicable. Ability to interpret and apply City and State requirements; ability to read and interpret blueprints or specifications. Depending on area of assignment may also require thorough knowledge of general roadway construction traffic plans Erosion and Sediment Control measures Stormwater Management practices Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan implementation and/or the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Standard office work environment less than 20 of the time. The majority of duties are performed in the field.

Work is performed around moving mechanical parts and traffic/roadways. Work requires exposure to loud noise chemicals/hazardous waste fumes/airborne particles electrical hazards and fuels including diesel gasoline and kerosene. Work requires ability to drive light and heavy equipment.

Work requires exposure to extreme weather conditions.

Physical demands include frequent reaching standing and standing; occasional stooping kneeling crouching lifting fingering grasping and repetitive motion; and rarely crawling pushing pulling and feeling. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 30 lbs. frequently and/or 10 lbs. constantly to move objects. Must be able to hear and communicate effectively with or without accommodation.

Must be available to work nights weekends holidays and weather and nonweather emergency oncall. This position may be subject to federal DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.
