As an Ambulance Dispatcher you are a vital link in ensuring patients receive timely and professional care. Position Overview The Ambulance Dispatcher is responsible for receiving prioritizing and coordinating ambulance and medical resource dispatches for emergency and nonemergency situations. This position requires exceptional communication skills attention to detail and the ability to work effectively under pressure. Dispatchers ensure the smooth operation of our services by maintaining accurate records and coordinating efficiently with field staff and healthcare partners. Key Responsibilities - Receive and process incoming emergency and nonemergency calls accurately and promptly.
- Assign and dispatch ambulances based on priority location and resource availability ensuring quick response times.
- Operate and maintain the computeraided dispatch (CAD) system such as Zoll Respond for realtime tracking and documentation of calls.
- Communicate effectively with field crews via radio phone or other communication systems to ensure situational awareness and operational safety.
- Monitor the status of ambulances and crews making adjustments as necessary to address changing needs.
- Provide basic prearrival instructions to callers when appropriate.
- Coordinate with hospitals healthcare facilities and other agencies to ensure smooth patient handoffs.
- Log and maintain detailed records of calls dispatches and field activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dispatch Supervisor.
Required Certifications Candidates must have or be willing to obtain the following certifications: - Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD): Certification through the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch (IAED). Certification provided if not already obtained.
- Incident Command System (ICS):
- National Incident Management System (NIMS):
- Hazardous Materials Awareness
- Typing Certificate: Demonstrating typing competency at greater than 40 words per minute. Obtainable through Typing Test.
ICS NIMS and HazMat Awareness can be obtained by going to . Qualifications - High school diploma or GED required.
- Prior experience in dispatching EMS or related fields preferred but not required.
- Proficiency in using computeraided dispatch (CAD) systems preferred (training provided).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure in a fastpaced environment.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and EMS operations is a plus.
- Proficiency with basic computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite.
- Willingness to work flexible schedules including nights weekends and holidays.
Physical and Environmental Requirements - Ability to sit for extended periods while using computers and communication equipment.
- Work in a dynamic highpressure call center environment.
