Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is heavy manual work in collecting garbage and refuse.

Work involves performing heavy manual work in the collection of garbage refuse trash and recycling on residential routes. Work is performed as a member of a crew under close supervision.

A CDL is NOT required for this Seasonal position; this is an excellent opportunity for a candidate to learn the ropes with the DPW team! Many of our Seasonal employees go on to full time employment with the City.

Up to 40 hours per week; Work hours are typically 5:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 days.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Picks up and carries medium to largesized containers in front of houses on an established route; picks up trash in other areas as directed.
  • Dumps container into truck ensuring that all refuse is deposited in the truck; cleans area around truck and container; returns empty container to its proper place.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE EXPERIENCE SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions of the work.
  • Some knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of garbage trucks.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other employees and to deal with the public in a pleasant courteous and tactful manner.
  • Physical strength sufficient to lift and carry heavy objects over a long distance under adverse weather conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Requires the ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions for extended periods of time in and around vehicular traffic.
  • Works among heavy machinery dangerous / sharp objects.
  • May be exposed to slippery wet or icy conditions.
  • Exposure to noisy environments.
  • Additional hazards not listed here may be encountered.

SALARY BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund Non Tested position.

This seasonal position is not eligible to receive medical benefits vacation pay sick pay holiday union membership or union contractual benefits. Any period of seasonal employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time. Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 calendar days.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: 1 a preemployment background check and 2 a preemployment physical examination including preemployment drug screening accordance with the Citys Drug Free Workplace Policy*.
