Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is currently seeking qualified applicants for a Health Physicist I. EH&S is an employing unit which reports to the Office of University Counsel at Iowa State University (ISU). EH&S aids the campus community in preventing illness and injury protects the environment and connects the university to the message of safety and preparedness. EH&S delivers effective education fosters beneficial partnerships maintains technical expertise and provides exemplary service.
Specific responsibilities of this position include supporting the Radiation Safety program through implementation of ISUs radiation safety policies and procedures; regular safety surveys of research laboratories including collection of samples and using analytical methods to quantify the level of contamination if found; review of engineering and administrative controls to track inventory and to reduce potential exposure risks; and calibration or validation of radiation detection equipment. These responsibilities will be accomplished by becoming proficient in various radiation measurement and sampling methods devices and direct reading instrumentation. The candidate will also help monitor the worker dosimetry program to verify employee compliance with ISUs ALARA program.
The successful candidate will have the ability to form positive working relationships with faculty staff students and external partners and establish professional campus and community relationships through effective written and oral communication; strong problemsolving capabilities along with the ability to work independently as well as with a team; and excellent organizational and multitasking skills to handle a variety of simultaneous duties. The candidate will also possess the ability to routinely use mobile devices and computers along with a variety of software to develop and maintain compliance records and create related reports.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.
Example of Duties
Conducts surveys and inspects research laboratories to ensure compliance with rules regulations and guidelines.
Implements and maintains radioactive safety compliance and waste disposal programs.
Oversees and prepares packaging of radioactive materials.
Identifies collects and analyzes environmental samples for nonroutine radiation safety compliance surveys.
Conducts and administers monitoring programs and performs tests and calibrations.
Identifies radiation issues and applies corrective measures.
Assists in developing and revising programs and procedures.
Assesses emergencies and coordinates cleanup corrective measures and prevention.
Audits quality assurance.
