Job Description

The Senior Accountant is a key contributor to the Los Angeles Pacific University finance team critically ensuring the timely preparation of monthly financial statements according to GAAP and higher education guidelines in a highvolume setting. Taking ownership of the Jenzabar ERP system as the primary finance lead this position is responsible for troubleshooting indepth analysis and implementing effective solutions. Core responsibilities encompass reviewing and posting transactions proactively identifying and proposing ERP system improvements preparing and reviewing reconciliations posting journal entries contributing to variance analysis and financial closing processes and managing the financial calendar. Furthermore the Senior Accountant supports audit processes overseas student tuition billing and financial aid liaison activities prepares regulatory filings participates in grant management stays abreast of accounting principles and provides crucial backup support to the Accounting Manager.

LAPUs core hours for fulltime employees: Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (Pacific Time). During these hours we expect all employees to be available for communication meetings and other workrelated activities. Outside of these hours employees may have flexibility in scheduling their work hours with their managers approval.

Hybrid: This position is classified as Hybrid Works regularly from LAPU San Dimas CA office and home office as agreed by manager. The classification of this position is subject to change based on business needs job performance etc. If an employee changes their physical location/residence to another state it could impact future employment.

Remote Expectation: We expect our employees to be able to fulfill their LAPU responsibilities with minimal distractions. While remote work does offer flexibility employees should make arrangements for regular dependent care during work hours.

Compensation: $25.44 $31.79 paygrade 9 (nonexempt/hourly).

Required Experience / Education

  • Bachelors degree in finance accounting or related area of study AND 35 years of relevant or related accounting experience

Desired Experience / Education

  • Masters degree in business administration (MBA) accounting finance or related area of study and/or CPA
  • More than 5 years of experience working in an accounting or similar role
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of fund accounting financial audits and internal controls
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ERP systems & financial reporting including technical data analysis and business system analysis

Essential Functions

  • Assist in preparation of monthly financial statements in accordance to GAAP and higher education reporting guidelines by critical deadlines in a highvolume fastpaced environment.
  • Primary finance lead on Jenzabar ERP system including troubleshooting analyzing and implementing solutions for any configuration or transaction with a financial impact
  • Monthly review of transactions recorded to the financial statements to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Analyze and propose any required reengineering to ERP system configuration to best align university processes and reporting
  • Prepare and/or review all reconciliations as assigned including all university bank accounts receivables and payables record reconciling items and submit reconciliations by assigned deadlines.
  • Prepare and post journals which may include consolidations and eliminations.
  • Assist in preparing detailed variance analysis with explanations to the Accounting Manager by assigned deadlines.
  • Assist in managing monthend and yearend closing.
  • Create and maintain a financial calendar to inform parties of necessary deadline adherence for business processes including monthly & annual financial close annual external audit preparations & Uniform Guidance audits and other business office functions.
  • Maintain awareness of accounting issues and evolving accounting guidance.
  • Assist in the coordination of annual audit and quarterly review activities of external auditors.
  • Manage the setup maintenance and reconciliation of student tuition billing.
  • Work with Accounting Manager and Controller to formulate implement document and monitor University policies procedures and internal controls.
  • Manage Finance Office functions for Federal State and institutional financial aid programs including recording of funds drawing down of funds reconciliation and audit requirements.
  • Prepare international federal state and local regulatory filings as needed including but not limited to Form 1098T Form 1099 IPEDS state annual reports as directed by management.
  • Participate in planning for managing and recording activity associated with awarded institutional grants.
  • Maintain an understanding of general ledger account numbers independent contractor definitions sales/use tax regulations and W9 requirements.
  • Participate in other projects as required by senior management.
  • Keep informed of new development areas in regards to nonprofit accounting.
  • Provide backup support to the Accounting Manager and perform other duties outside the scope of the job description as directed.
  • Provide backup support in completing the Accounts Payable function for staff when out of office.

  • Knowledge of US GAAP and higher education rules and regulations is required combined with the ability to research and propose company positions on complex accounting issues.
  • Understanding of higher education accounting processes and issue recognition.
  • Ability to work in a fastpaced environment and manage well through complexities in meeting critical deadlines.
  • Complex problemsolving and conflict resolution skills
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and appropriate software applications within online education (see below)
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask various duties and projects to ensure timely completion.
