Job Responsibilities Tests and performs maintenance on fire sprinkler systems. Assists with testing fire alarm systems. Reviews outside fire extinguisher contract services ensuring that fire extinguishers are serviced on regular bases. Advises department administrators of priorities for fire sprinkler and alarm system repair work and improvements. Reviews architectural plans for compliance with applicable codes for fire sprinkler and alarm systems. Ensures review comments are incorporated into design solution for the project. Reviews requests and issues hot work permits for campus shops and contractors. Problem Solving This position has the responsibility to test fire sprinkler systems and conduct fire alarm system testing. The incumbent also responds to fire alarms issues hot work permits and takes systems in and out of service. The incumbent works with departments to incorporate building and fire code life safety features into designed construction projects. The incumbent has the authority to visit any construction site and stop work in progress if it is not in compliance with fire and safety code standard or could pose a direct threat to the preservation of life or property. This position works with extinguisher maintenance contractors to establish schedules as needed. Comments This position may be required to work weekends cover special events and provide fire safety educational programming.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree in Engineering related field or equivalency 2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education); two years related experience in fire alarm or fire sprinkler system installation testing and maintenance required. Demonstrated knowledge of the National Fire Protection Association NFPA International Building Code IBC International Fire Code IFC and State Fire Prevention Rules and Regulations regarding system testing and maintenance required. Demonstrated computer skills human relations and effective communication skills are also required. Incumbent must obtain a Utah State Fire Marshals Office Class A Certification for testing and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems within six months of employment. A current Drivers License is required to perform duties. Bachelors degree in Engineering or related field and the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology NICET certification for sprinkler technicians are preferred.
