RN Neurology Movement Disorders

Department Summary:

The Parkinsons Disease and Movement Disorder Division offers comprehensive nationally and internationally recognized treatment to patients and their care partners. This Division serves as a Center for Excellence for the Parkinson Foundation CurePSP Huntingtons Disease and Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA).

This position requires independent critical thinking care coordination engagement in transitions of care and the ability to appropriately triage patients with complex medical problems. The RN must collaborate with providers nurses medical assistants schedulers and all other disciplines as needed to ensure effective and timely communication with the patient care partners and other team members.

Working Conditions:

• This position requires onsite presence partnered with telecommuting/remote work 80 on site 20 Remote).
• Ability to lift bend stoop reach carry push pull and walk throughout the work period. Able to lift 35 lbs independently. Complies with the safe patient mobilization policy when lifting or positioning dependent patients including using mechanical lifts and coordinating the assistance of other personnel.

• The work environment carries risk of exposure to human tissue/fluids and radiation.

Requirements (competencies duties etc.:

1. Independent nursing practice

• Direct and indirect patient care
• Assess patient status apply critical thinking skills and work independently within RN scope to perform nursing assessment and develop care plan.
• Timely response to patient MyChart messages phone calls and routed EPIC encounters from team members.
• Lead nurse visits and actively participate in covisits with provider to deliver patient education care coordination and triage.
• Patient education about lab/test results medications specialty medications/devices and medical equipment.
• Take initiative to review patient charts before provider visits in preparation for patient assessment.

• • Work with medical assistants to set up labs and other tests prior to patient appointment
  • Meet with patients and present to provider
  • Be proactive and anticipate patient needs

2. Evaluate neurologic issues and understand the management goals and treatment options for movement disorder.

3. Assist with clinical flow and rooming as needed for break coverage staffing shortages and as directed by Nurse Manager.

4. Program development and implementation

5. Communication

• Effectively communicate to providers patients and other staff as needed (Epic Outlook telephone in person)
• Be proficient in synthesizing patient information and summarize in a succinct effective manner
• Engage in positive supportive verbal communication with patients families providers and support staff

6. Involvement in the development and coordination of educational events and presentations geared toward patients and families allied health and professional education.

• Provide inservice training to nurses and other healthcare providers on the clinic operations and basics of Parkinsons disease Huntingtons disease and other movement disorders.
• Organize and provide team training opportunities within Therapists Aligned in Managing Parkinsons Disease (TEAMPD) or PD Project ECHO to underserved areas.

7. Represent the OHSU Parkinson Center as Center of Excellence Coordinator with the national Parkinson Foundation CurePSP and/or Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA). Participates in clinic department OHSU teams/committees as appropriate and as approved by nurse manager and Movement Disorders program director.

8. Comply with regulatory requirements and standards and OHSU policies and procedures.

• Three years or more clinical practice as an RN
• Associate or Bachelors Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA)
• Associates Degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
• Current unencumbered Oregon RN License
• Current unencumbered Washington RN license within 30 days of start date
• BLS at time of hire and must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA (upload documentation with online application)
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accomodation

• Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse Certification (CNRN) or other applicable advanced certification
• Advanced triage skills; telephone triage experience
• Experience in an ambulatory clinic setting
• Highly effectie verbal and written communication skills in a variety of collaborative settings
• Demonstrated experience in patient and family education including development of teaching materials
• Excellent organizational skills

• Current competency with Epic EMR

Length of Orientation Experienced Nurse

• External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.

• Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
