DEQ has an open opportunity for an Environmental Specialist II.

It is fulltime 40 hours per week) withState Benefits.

The Environmental Specialist II is responsible for the development of comprehensive basinwide water resources management plans (basin plans) that evaluate water quality and quantity issues for each of the states major river basins. These responsibilities are mandated by the federal Clean Water Act (CWA) as well as North Carolina general statute.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Gather analyze interpret and report on water quality data (e.g. biological chemical and physical parameters).
  • Work with program consultants and modelers to report on and understand water resource issues identified in a basin.
  • Identify major water resource issues in a river basin and work with various agencies and stakeholders on recommendations to address those issues.
  • Prepare and present written reports and PowerPoint presentations for various audiences including the Environmental Management Commission (EMC) federal state and local resource agencies and governing boards public events and forums and community leaders.
  • Support the recommendations approved by the EMC for protecting and improving water resources in a basin.
  • Provide support to various federal state and local resource management agencies on water resource issues including point and nonpoint source pollution water quality and quantity data analysis and modeling watershed action plans grant proposals water resource management policies permit renewals and environmental review documents.
The Division of Water Resources(DWR):
The Division of Water Resources (DWR) is responsible for protecting North Carolinas drinking surface and ground water for all waterbodies including lakes streams rivers wetlands and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including issuing permits investigations regulatory compliance and enforcement monitoring and field assessments certifications laboratory analysis and testing planning water quality standards management educational outreach and other efforts. The Division comprises five Sections: Water Quality Regional Operations; Water Sciences; Public Water Supply; Water Quality Permitting and Water Planning. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in one of the agricultural biological engineering environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
