This position is primarily responsible for the heavy scale inspections within the state for the Inspections Weights & Measures Program. The most qualified candidate will be located within either Aberdeen Watertown or the northeast region to conduct inspections. Staff are responsible for ensuring equitable commerce by testing and inspecting weighing and measuring devices to ensure device accuracy. Staff will identify violations of conditions discuss and explain violations with business owners; complete required reports to ensure compliance with State and Federal Rules and Regulations; as well as ensure consumers are receiving fair and impartial treatment.

Working Conditions:
This position is for the Aberdeen Watertown or northeastern area of the state. Required: general daily travel with some overnights. Applicants must be capable of reaching grabbing pulling pushing climbing general lifting and some heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.; conducting inspections during inclement weather conditions; exposure to hazardous substances combustible materials climbing in and out of scale truck multiple items during a single inspection (as well as multiple times per day) and cannot be afraid of heights.

Licenses and Certifications:
Incumbent must have a valid drivers license and have a Class A commercial drivers license (CDL) with Air Brakes. Employee will be subject to preemployment random reasonablesuspicion postaccident follow up and returntoduty drug and alcohol testing.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A mechanical aptitude; the ability to trouble a variety of situations pertaining to public scale devices as well as your own scale truck; have an understanding of the agricultural community; have the ability to communicate with the public as well as being able to explain issues and the rules of the testing conducted; be selfmotivated organized and driven to meet deadlines

Knowledge of the following programs are beneficial but not required for the position:

Weights & Measures Program pertaining to scale and meter devices; understand laws and regulations applicable to inspections conducted by inspections staff; understand proper implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) knowledge of NIST Handbooks 44 130 and 133 is helpful but not required.

Ability to:
  • repetitively lift up to 50 pounds;
  • add subtract multiply divide convert units of measurement and perform algebraic functions;
  • read and comprehend written directions policies statutes and regulations;
  • develop relationships with the public other agencies as well as our own inspectors;
  • manage time;
  • develop an efficient schedule;
  • meet needs of agencies;
  • address requests and problems as they arise both effectively and professionally;
  • maintain a valid commercial drivers license at all times;
  • explain laws regulations SOPs and handbook requirements applicable to inspections conducted by office inspectors and agencies served; able to make reasonable logical decisions;
  • determine priorities;
  • handle special requests;
  • determine workload priorities;
  • work with a variety of personalities;
  • handle challenging situations.
