Job Description

Overview:

*This is a oneyear rotating position*

The Office of Youth Engagement and Advancement (OYEA) works to uplift young voices in decisionmaking processes and helps advance the lives of young people across Boston through programming and resource connecting. We feel it is crucial to have young voices actively engaged in the policies and decisions that impact their lives and our mission is to provide the platform for them to do so.

All Boston youth should have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. We aim to serve as a central hub connecting young people to these resources and opportunities across City Hall and in their communities. We also value the youth workers who are on the ground with Bostons young people each day and aim to provide the necessary support and developmental opportunities to uplift their work. Our goal is to create and support spaces that empower our next generation to become community leaders and agents of change.

Position Overview:


The Communications Fellow will be part of the OYEA team that supports the coordination of the daytoday outreach and communication functions of the Office. This role will support the facilitation and implementation of all OYEA communication strategies event promotion graphic design and marketing as well as assist in civic engagement efforts and connecting youth to programs and services. This role will work in an administrative office setting and requires meaningful engagement with constituents and residents throughout a range of City of Boston communities.

Reporting directly to the Communications & Outreach Manager this position is designed for a professional with the interest and experience of connecting residents and constituents to programs and services throughout a variety of media types. This position will also require the ability to engage with outside stakeholders local organizations youthserving networks and other collaborators. The Communications Fellow must be equipped with strong communication and organization skills a passion for working in an inclusive environment experience working in a fastpaced environment and a desire to work on initiatives and issues affecting youth and young adults to accomplish the goals of OYEA.

Responsibilities:

  • Tells the story of the Office through various media channels (social media website design newsletter etc).
  • Supports the creation and distribution of OYEAs weekly newsletter and responds to inquiries from the Offices website.
  • Plans and executes campaigns and programs to further the citys youth engagement goals.
  • Supports digital content creation for the Office and graphic design.
  • Creates innovative materials content interactive online spaces and dynamic events to raise awareness about the departments goals and initiatives.
  • Supports the development of new engagement strategies to support the Offices goals and success in reaching and connecting thousands of Boston youth to programs and services.
  • Collaborates with city departments other government agencies and nonprofit service providers to ensure the perspective and needs of youth are considered in various projects programs or initiatives.
  • Attends resource fairs community meetings and events on behalf of OYEA to promote all programs and services offered officewide.
  • Serves as a liaison between OYEA and the community at all three levels of youth work (youth organization staff and organizations themselves).
  • Assists with connecting Language Other Than English (LOTE) speakers with available translation and language services as needed.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two 2 years of full or equivalent parttime experience.
  • Bachelors degree is strongly preferred and may be substituted for two 2 years of the required experience.
  • Experience with graphic design content creation social media photography video editing and more.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Canva Adobe Microsoft applications and Google Suite.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish Haitian Creole Cape Verdean Creole Chinese and Vietnamese).
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to positively engage with diverse communities.
  • Interest in public service civic engagement youth services & programs.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills required.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Flexible schedule as some nights and weekends are required. Travel to sites might be required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of the City of Boston and its neighborhoods is preferred.
