Job Description

JOB GOAL:

To advance the colleges mission vision principles values and strategic initiatives through continuous improvement decisions.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision the instructor is responsible for teaching ESL courses to students enrolled in Kirkwoods Secondary Programs. Instruction will take place in Cedar Rapids though there might be opportunities to teach in Coralville or online if there are also openings at those locations. At times there might be travel to other Kirkwood locations for meetings. The instructor also assists students in transitioning from ESL courses to Kirkwood related work training and higher education opportunities in collaboration with other Kirkwood staff.

Classes are held Monday through Thursday for two hours each day. The session dates for this year are: Session 1 July 7 Sept. 11 Session 2 Sept. 29 Dec. 11 Session 3 January 12March 12 and Session 4 March 30June 4. Currently there are 2 openings for evening class 5:30 PM 7:30 PM Monday to Thursday). The total hours per week for one class equates to 10 hours with extra hours being available for team meetings special projects and professional development. Ideally onboarding for the position will take place early June. This will allow enough time for the instructor to complete required training and prep for the upcoming class.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist students with coursework in a variety of formats including individualized instruction computer assisted instruction large group courses and other methods.
  • Collaborate with fellow learning center instructors on curriculum development student intake/advising and staff development activities.
  • Conduct CASAS assessments for eligible students.
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.
  • Provide contextualized scaffolder interactive instruction that includes cooperative learning tasks and implements ESL college and career readiness and CASAS ESL standards.
  • Track attendance daily and submit reports.
  • Respond in a timely matter to communications and requests from program director and coordinator.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and ongoing professional development opportunities.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional 1033 standing pushing pulling and grasping. Frequent 3466 reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant 67100 sitting walking repetitive motion talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution or will have one by May 30 2025.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSLICENSES CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Prior experience teaching adult ESL/ABE learners or working with adult immigrants
  • Prior experience teaching ESL or foreign language at any age
  • Bachelors or masters degree in TESOL Education Foreign Language Teaching or related field
  • TESOL training/certification preferred such as K12 certification in ESL bachelors or graduate studies in TESOL TEFL certification or completion of MN Literacy Council preservice training courses for adult ESL educators
