Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Culpeper District is seeking a Supervisor Maintenance to perform a wide variety of simple to complex roadway maintenance and repair operations safely and efficiently. This position serves as a lead worker on a work crew provides technical guidance to crew members performing maintenance activities and equipment operation while promoting safety at all times oversees daily work tasks helps increase skill sets and proficiencies of crew members efficiently uses materials and manpower and assists the Area Headquarters Maintenance Superintendent with other duties as needed to meet business goals. Additionally this position provides oversight for contract crews as needed. This position is designated as essential and as such all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather disaster response and emergency operations.
We are seeking a dynamic Maintenance Supervisor and in this position you will:
Supervise crews performing daily roadway maintenance operations.
Assess plan and schedule roadway maintenance including estimating materials labor and costs.
Order supplies and monitor expenditures.
Evaluate staff develop individualized onthejob training and give feedback for continued growth.
Safety is our number one focus. You are encouraged to identify workplace safety hazards and make recommendations for improvements.
Lead safety meetings train staff on safety ensure work zones and traffic control align with agency standards and guidelines.
Respond to customer inquiries and identify solutions.
Maintain daily work accomplishment records.
Coordinate direct and respond to emergencies blocking roads such as traffic accidents and debris. You will provide or oversee traffic control while performing operations to reopen the road in a timely fashion. You will supervise severe weather responses for snow ice and other types of hazardous weather conditions. Severe weather shifts are typically 12 hours and may include working weekends holidays and afterhours. This position is required to work during emergencies.
Serve as a working supervisor by operating equipment and performing manual labor as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Skilled in the use of computers and software applications.
Valid drivers license.
Skilled in operating and maintaining light to heavy duty trucks and equipment.
Ability to perform manual labor.
Ability to direct evaluate and train others.
Safety shoes required.
Considerable knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.
Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications thereafter.
Knowledge of inventory practices and procedures.
Additional Considerations
A combination of training experience or education in Management Maintenance Construction or related field desired.
DCR Erosion and Sediment Control certification.
Experience supervising others and evaluating performance.
Experience planning schedules and assigning manpower.
Ability to gather data conduct research and create reports.
Experience overseeing emergency operations activities including snow removal storm damage and accident cleanup.
Inventory management experience.
Experience in roadway maintenance and or construction activities.
