Job Description

Victoria College Program: Creativity & Society

Position: Sessional Lecturer 1 Position CUPE 3902 Unit 2

CRE272H1S Song Lyrics and Songwriting A course exploring song and lyrics in various musical genres with a review of major developments in the repertoire. Topics addressed could include the ethics of borrowed forms instrumentation and collaboration commercial songwriting standards and practices major aspects of music industries and reception. Students will have the opportunity to create compositions and pursue projects related to aspects of the field. Musical ability and training are not required.

Expected course time: Fridays 11 am 1 pm
Enrolment cap: 35
Dates of appointment: January 1 2026 to April 30 2026
Course Modality: Inperson Victoria College campus
Teaching Assistant: There is no TA support

The salary will be as per the CUPE agreement (e.g. September 2023 Sessional Lecturer rate is $9457.90 including vacation pay).

Requirements:

  • PhD (strongly preferred) MFA or other postgraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g. Music English History etc.
  • Expertise in song lyrics song culture the music marketplace creative industries popular culture and cultural history along with related issues of diversity and inclusion as demonstrated by a combination of scholarship publications and professional experience within and beyond university contexts
  • Strong skills in undergraduate teaching as shown by previous experience and evaluations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • A relevant and adaptable theoretical base with which to put the course materials into context
