Job Description

Employment Term (days): 190

Pay Scale: Paraprofessional/ ClericalPay Grade: 8

Primary Purpose:

Administer direct/indirect occupational therapy to students with mental physical or emotional disabilities under the supervision of a registered occupational therapist so students may benefit from their special educational program.

Qualification Guidelines:

Education/Certifications:

Associates degree from an accredited occupational therapy assistant program Completed the certification examination for occupational therapy assistant and licensed by the State of Texas as an occupational therapist assistant

Experience:

Experience with pediatrics and/or schoolbased therapy preferred but not required

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of rehabilitation procedures activities and equipment used in occupational therapy Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervision of motor technician as delegated by supervising occupational therapist

Mental/Physical/Environmental Demands:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting Motion: Repetitive hand motions frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying; may be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchairs or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; communicate effectively and professionally at all times

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Direct Services

1. Follow through with occupational therapist student program as given by the occupational therapist.

2. Provide effective and safe treatment.

3. Demonstrate the necessary knowledge and ability to perform all occupational therapy procedures.

4. Recognize any contraindications or necessary precautions prior to treatment.

5. Provide an ongoing assessment of treatment procedures and their effect of the students progress.

6. Participate in the Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the review of supervising occupational therapists IEP for each student according to district procedures.

Consultation

7. Consult with educational staff regarding the use of specialized equipment and materials. 8. Consult with educational staff and parents regarding occupational therapy.

9. Provide staff and parent training to assist school personnel in understanding of occupational therapy program and may include inhome training.

10. Consult with parents teachers administrators and other staff to enhance students program.

Student Management

11. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level interests and needs of the student.

12. Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook.

Program Management

13. Assist in program development with collaboration as part of therapy and/ or assistive technology team.

14. Assist in the selection of equipment and adaptive material.

15. Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.

Administration

16. Compile maintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents required.

17. Comply with policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rule and local board policy.

18. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.

19. Communicate effectively with colleagues students and parents.

20. Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.

21. Maintain friendly customerservicedriven interactions with all stakeholders students teachers administrators and coworkers.

Other

22. Complete Medicaid/SHARS duties when determined necessary by the ARD committee. 23. Maintain the district established system for recordkeeping and documenting all Medicaid/SHARS services as they are provided within the timelines established for the program and/or VISD Medicaid/SHARS operating procedures.

24. Follow all VISD Medicaid/SHARS operating procedures.

25. Complete of annual Random Moment Time Study (RMTS) training and complete RMTS Fairbanks surveys for assigned random moment no later than 24 hours after event.

26. Perform other duties as assigned.
