Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
Definition
Psychiatric nurse practitioners (PNP) evaluate diagnose and treat patients with mental emotional and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations develop treatment plans prescribe medication and evaluate treatment results. The PNP will primarily provide outpatient treatment to individuals who receive services from The Arc of the Ozarks but will also provide services to individuals served by other agencies and communitybased patients. The PNP may also perform contractual duties with other organizations as approved by the Executive Staff.
The PNP must have excellent reasoning analytical and communication skills. A strong attention to detail patience and perseverance are paramount but it is also important the PNP be an empathetic emotionally stable leader. The PNP must be able to make treatment recommendations that are data and research based. In addition can rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. The PNP is an exempt salaried position.

Serves as an ambassador of the mission purpose and Core Values of The Arc of the Ozarks.
Attend at least two Arcsponsored events such as fundraisers or networking events.
Clinical Skills and Expectations
Evaluates patients by interviewing patient family and other persons; conducting physical examinations; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting administering and interpreting psychological tests; ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results. Analyze data and results of assessments to diagnose patients.
Develops treatment plans by determining nature and extent of cognitive emotional developmental social and behavioral disorders; establishing treatment goals and methodologies; measure progress against the plan and adjust as needed.
Treats patients by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications; discussing progress toward goals with patients; providing instructions; monitoring effect of medications; supervising staff provision of services.
Maintains interdisciplinary treatment by reviewing treatment plans and progress; consulting and collaborating with primary care physicians mental health therapists nurses and other health care providers.
Improves staff competence by providing training and discussions regarding the interrelationship between psychosocial and physiological problems psychotropic medications crisis intervention and related issues.
Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms medications and treatment events; writing summaries.
Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
Prescribe and administer medications according to diagnosis
Monitor patients to determine efficacy and potential side effects of medications.
Provide crisis intervention as needed.
Complete all necessary clinical documentation in an accurate and timely manner.
Supervised internally by a psychiatrist with whom there is a Collaborative Practice Agreement established upon hire. Liability insurance and collaborating physician costs are both paid for by The Arc of the Ozarks.
Collaborate with a broader team of physicians psychologists nurses and other professionals to assess and adjust treatment plans.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion.
Ability to work with and respect persons with intellectual disabilities and other developmental disabilities.
Ability to work varied and flexible hours and to accept and adapt to changes in assignments methods policies etc.
Considerable knowledge of modern psychological principles and practices and other researchbased techniques as they apply to habilitation programming for those with intellectual disabilities and other developmental disabilities.
Considerable knowledge of the behavioral sciences and allied disciplines involved in the evaluation care and habilitation of persons with intellectual disabilities and other developmental disabilities.
Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Missouri.
Maintain current DEA registration.
Excellent knowledge and familiarity with current DSMV TR criteria
Familiar with crisis assessment tools and techniques.
Strong working knowledge of general psychiatric principles and practices.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants subordinates and other facility staff.
Ability to work as a direct contact staff with individuals served to demonstrate needed behavior for direct contact staff.
Ability to travel intermittently within the state of Missouri as needed.
Ability to bill commercial insurance.
Ability to work in a busy clinic environment with flexibility to work varying hours.
Minimum Experience and Training Qualifications
Bachelors degree in biology premed physical sciences psychology or related field
Successful graduation from a qualified nurse practitioner program
Obtain and maintain licensure as required by the State of Missouri
Participation in further medical education and professional organization memberships are preferred.
