Job Description

Title: Physical Education Teacher

Location: KEC Oakleigh

Employment: 182 day position for the 2025/26 school year subject to all rules and regulations covering KIEA teachers

BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Position is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters promotes and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and exercise; that motivates each student to cultivate physical fitness and appropriate social and emotional adjustment; that discovers and develops talents of students in physical achievement; and that develops strength skill agility poise and coordination in individual dual and team physical activities and sports in accordance with each students ability.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness health education and individual dual or team sports utilizing districtapproved curriculum and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Analyzes demonstrates and explains basic skills knowledge and strategies of formal sports games rhythms and fundamentals of body movement.
  3. Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials in alignment with national standards; provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
  4. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly productive environment in the physical education areas.
  5. Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
  6. Evaluates academic and social growth of students; prepares report cards; and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports checklists census forms and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.
  7. Maintains control of storage and use of school property.
  8. Evaluates each students growth in physical skills knowledge and contribution in team sports.
  9. Communicates with parents and school staff on student progress.
  10. Supervises students in outofclassroom activities during the assigned working day.
  11. Administers testing in accordance with building testing procedures.
  12. Assists students with developing healthy lifestyle behaviors and social skills.
  13. Confers with other classroom teachers and related service personnel concerning any educational needs of the students served in the program.
  14. Enables students to develop an appreciation of the importance of physical education.
  15. Attends staff development programs curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
  16. Keeps abreast of developments and research in the field of adapted physical education and employee wellness.
  17. Serves as a member of the schools PBIS team.
  18. Works with school teams in supporting behavior through FBAs and PBSPs.
  19. Regular reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the job.
  20. Physically restrain students in emergency situations.
  21. Performs other duties as directed by Administrator/Principal.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. Must possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in physical education.
  2. Additional endorsement in health preferred.
  3. Demonstrated experience working with students with disabilities preferred.
  4. Understand major components of federal and state legislation relating to physical education.
  5. Ability to integrate technology into the curriculum.
  6. Ability to communicate informational ideas in spoken and written language for clear understanding.
  7. Willingness to participate in all phases of the instructional program.
  8. Ability to work constructively with parents students and staff.
  9. Current CPR and first aid certification.
  1. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification.
  1. Must pass criminal background check as required by School Safety Legislation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to stand walk sit use hands to finger handle or feel reach with hands and arms climb or balance stoop kneel crouch or crawl talk hear (in a quiet or noisy environment) taste and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and ability to adjust/focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety wellbeing and work output of students.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to compare analyze communicate both orally and in writing in the English language copy coordinate instruct compute synthesize evaluate use interpersonal skills compile and negotiate.
