- Must provide proof of completion and certification from a recognized Firearms and Toolmark Examiner program.
- Minimum of four 4 years of professional experience involving firearm/toolmark examination and research in a laboratory is desired.
- A minimum of two 2 years of professional experience in IBIS acquisitions and correlations would be an asset.
- University degree with a physical applied or forensic science major.
- Must successfully pass a yearly proficiency examination.
- Knowledge of the design construction and safe operation of firearms and the various types of ammunition.
- Knowledge of modern laboratory methods procedures and equipment related to firearm examination. Including but not limited to Serial Number restoration drop testing and trigger pull analysis.
- Proficiency in working with a comparison microscope.
- Ability to provide expert opinion testimony in court.
- Experience producing comprehensive technical reports for investigators and courts.
- Knowledge of Privately Manufactured Firearms and airguns would be an asset.
- Demonstrated history of providing excellent customer service and ability to deal with a high caseload.
- Demonstrated ability as a strategic thinker.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to train firearm analysts to become firearm examiners is desired.
- Professional Membership in the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners
- As part of your prehire screening you must complete an Enhanced Security Clearance. The Edmonton Police Services (EPS) has an exciting opportunity for one 1 individual to conduct forensic examination and identification of firearms ammunition and any related components firearms parts and accessories. Including air guns modified blankfiring guns and flare guns. Responsibilities of this position will include:
- Interpreting visual and microscopic marks with careful consideration of uniqueness.
- Providing opinions based on observations using the accepted range of conclusions in the scientific community.
- Providing expert witness testimony in courtbased examination findings.
- Ensuring the quality of work performed by the Firearms Examination Unit (FEU) personnel meets internal and generally accepted external standards.
- When required conduct regular quality assurance audits of processes and technical analyses FEU personnel perform.
- Ensuring proper protocol for safety and security of personnel exhibits and inventory.
- Assisting in the continued professional development of FEU personnel within the Forensic Sciences Branch.
- Mentoring and facilitating the training of new and existing personnel.
- Facilitating continuous improvement within the FEU.
