The Graduate Research Appointment (GRA) is a postbaccalaureate appointment for participants with an interest in biomedical research. The primary purpose is to provide a postbaccalaureate laboratory research experience that applies skills in science technology engineering or math to biomedical research including basic science or translational research. GRA participants will have the opportunity to participate in selected graduate classes and seminars while working in this role.
Dr. Andrew H. Limpers laboratory studies lung defense mechanisms and the elimination of fungal infections such as pneumocystis pneumonia in patients with impaired immune systems. Lung infections (pneumonias) are particularly lifethreatening in individuals with weakened host immunity. The team seeks to discover new methods beyond traditional antibiotics to prevent and combat lung infections in these patients. The GRA student will work on testing antiinflammatory and antifungal agents in mouse models of fungal pneumonia. They will also learn and serve as the primary caretaker for the laboratorys genetic mouse strains including managing breeding and genotyping protocols. Completed work may be presented in abstract form and submitted along with other data for publication
Bachelors degree with a strong background in science technology engineering or math. Authorization to work and remain in the United States without necessity for Mayo Clinic sponsorship now or in the future (for example be a U.S. citizen national or permanent resident refugee or asylee.
