Job Description

Victoria College Program: Education & Society

Position: Sessional Lecturer 1 Position CUPE 3902 Unit 2

EDS369H1S Special Topics: Toward Black Inclusion: Confronting AntiBlack Racism in Education This course explores the roots realities and impact of antiBlack racism in Canadian society and education. In the first half students will examine historical and contemporary forms of systemic oppression focusing on how antiBlack racism operates in educational contexts. Through the study of Black Canadian histories voices and lived experiences students will deepen their understanding of structural inequities and develop tools to critically analyze and challenge them. The second half of the course emphasizes collective responsibility and transformative action. Students will explore principles of Black inclusion solidarity and allyship with a focus on applying antiracism strategies in schools classrooms and organizational settings. The course equips students to imagine and support institutional change that promotes educational justice equity and the flourishing of Black communities.

Expected course time: Fridays 11 am 1 pm

Enrolment cap: 40

Dates of appointment: January 1 2026 to April 30 2026

Course Modality: Inperson Victoria College campus

Teaching Assistant:There is no TA support

The salary will be as per the CUPE agreement (e.g. September 2023 Sessional Lecturer rate is $9457.90 including vacation pay).

Requirements:

  • PhD/EdD in Education or a closely related field (e.g. Social Justice Education Sociology Black Studies Critical Race Studies Curriculum Studies or Equity Studies).
  • Demonstrated scholarly expertise in antiBlack racism Black inclusion and equityfocused education as evidenced by research publications or communityengaged work.
  • Proven experience teaching at the university level with a strong record of undergraduate teaching excellence.
  • Deep familiarity with the historical and contemporary dynamics of antiBlack racism in Canadian society and the education system.
  • Experience incorporating Black Canadian perspectives and voices into curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Strong commitment to inclusive accessible and culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to support students in developing critical and reflective practices related to educational justice.
  • Lived experience and/or community engagement that informs an understanding of Black inclusion and allyship in education (considered a strong asset).
  • Demonstrated qualifications in and commitment to inclusion diversity equity and accessibility (IDEA) in education.
