Job Description Summary:

Wastewater Treatment
Under general supervision to perform a variety of skilled maintenance repair and construction tasks on Water Resource Recovery equipment and facilities to ensure reliable and effective operation of the Water Resource Recovery Facility and to perform related duties as required.
As a member of the Water Resource Recovery Maintenance team supports the efforts of the overall Wastewater Treatment workgroup including Operations Maintenance Process Automation Systems and facility administration. Supports the efforts of several workgroups within the larger customer serviceoriented Utilities Department and provides support in a collaborative manner to foster teamwork and coordination within and across the Department including with Water Quality Utilities Maintenance Utilities Engineering Water Treatment and Business Services.

Job Description:

WASTEWATER TREATMENT

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs skilled maintenance and repair on treatment facility and remote facility equipment. This includes the following:
    • Troubleshoots repairs and overhauls pumps motors and associated equipment valves and piping chemical feeders material conveyance equipment hydraulic and pneumatic equipment biogas and natural gas boilers and HVAC equipment.
    • Performs the majority of the preventative maintenance duties such as filter belt and oil replacements.
    • Evaluates failed equipment or parts and implements proactive repairs that correct the cause of failure.
    • Estimates repair costs and purchases repair parts.
    • Estimates equipment downtime and assists Supervisors with coordinating repair activities with the operations staff.
    • Improvises repairs during emergency situations to keep facility equipment operational to maintain compliance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit requirements.
    • Updates Plant Operators and others regarding equipment problems.
    • Trains others in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
    • Works in confined spaces that require ventilation to protect against dangerous gases and fumes.
  • Performs technical diagnosis including:
    • Vibration analyses on rotating equipment using handheld diagnostic equipment and computer software to detect cause of problem and implement corrective action.
    • Utilizes precision alignment equipment on a routine basis or when installing equipment to ensure proper alignment of machinery and drive motors.
    • Utilizes computer software programs to diagnose and repair HVAC problems.
  • Maintains facility buildings and grounds including offsite facilities. Performs general housekeeping equipment cleaning minor structural repairs and construction painting and assists with lawn and landscape maintenance.
  • Utilizes computerized maintenance management software (Beehive) to track repair work spare parts usage and maintenance activities both preventative and corrective.
  • Follows annual Unit Process Maintenance schedule. Supports larger team in the coordination and completion of tasks in a timely manner.
  • Completes nonroutine work projects including planning purchasing supplies coordinating the work effort and communicating with other appropriate work groups. Modifies and upgrades facility equipment to meet treatment process needs.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals and mechanical schematics in the course of troubleshooting problems.
  • Maintains spare parts and supply inventories. Orders and purchases parts supplies and tools.
  • Oversees maintenance shop including checking out tools and supplies and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Supports Senior Industrial mechanics with daily needs of the facility and all major rehab and CIP projects the maintenance department is supporting.
  • Is alert to conditions and events occurring at the Water Resource Recovery Facility anticipates needed repairs and makes related recommendations. Updates technical knowledge through training trade journals/publications internet websites and sharing information and job experiences with other employees.

  • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
  • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self others materials and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.

  • Knowledge and experience in an industrial/mechanical environment.
  • Proficiency with tool use.
  • Demonstrates mechanical aptitude including the ability to troubleshoot and analyze asset performance.
  • Ability to complete and update First Aid and CPR Training and certification.
  • Knowledge of industry safety standards.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills.

  • Valid Drivers License and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information including criminal conviction history.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Maintenance experience at a wastewater treatment facility.
  • Vibration Analysis certification.
  • Welding certification.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing electrical and building codes.
  • Experience with large mechanical systems.
  • Colorado Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators Certification and/or Colorado Wastewater Collections System Operator Certification.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical and Mental Effort: Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks in an indoor and outdoor environment including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the ability to sit for long periods of time. Ability to work in odorous dirty conditions associated with a Wastewater Treatment Facility. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes which permits the employee to work in an industrial setting. Work will include periods of time viewing a computer monitor and operating a keyboard. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines and changing priorities and ability to work in and around equipment in an industrial setting in areas of areas of limited access elevated structures and confined spaces requiring standing walking lifting bending and kneeling; ability to use ladders stairs underground vaults cat walks and scaffolding; ability to lift 50 pounds; ability to hear audible alarms at 80 DB and higher; visual acuity manual dexterity in using precision and nonprecision hand tools power tools and technical devices. Knowledge of industry safety standards regulations and equipment.
  • Work Environment: Works primarily in an industrial environment. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. May work in permit required confined spaces that require ventilation and other measures to protect against dangerous gases and fumes.
  • Machines and Equipment Used: Precision and nonprecision hand and power tools (electric hydraulic and pneumatic) stationary tools such as drill press and lathe; welder; diagnostic equipment; precision measuring devices. Office equipment including computers telephone photocopy machine calculator and City vehicle.
