POSITION TITLE: Upward Bound Summer 24 Instructor (temporary)

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHPS:

Reports to: MCUB Director MCUB Associate Director

Summary of Position:


The Mills Institute at Northeastern University Upward Bound MCUB TRIO Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. MCUB is designed to enhance the academic skills of lowincome firstgeneration collegebound high school students in the Oakland and West Contra Costa Unified School District with the goal that participants will pursue postsecondary education. TRiO is funded by the U. S. Department of Education. The Summer Enrichment Program will provide academic instruction in core subjects: English Sciences and Mathematics. MCUB will also provide courses and workshops exploring various topics: Life Skills Study Skills College Preparation Career Exploration and Cultural Awareness.

Summer Enrichment Program Description

The MCUB Program offers a sixweek summer academic enrichment program for students entering grades 9th12th. The MCUB summer program will be conducted on the Mills College Campus. Staff orientations will likely take place June 10th from 10:30 am to 4 pm. Instruction for the MCUB Summer Program is scheduled to begin Monday June 16th and continues through Thursday July 25th. The daily instructional schedule is 1:30pm3:30pm Monday Thursday (Two 60minute periods).Also instructors will cover a tutoring period from 3:40pm to 5:30 PM Monday through Thursday.

There will be no programming on June 19th and July 7th.

The Mills Institute at Northeastern University Upward Bound (MCUB) TRIO Program is currently seeking 5 highly motivated knowledgeable creative engaging student focused experienced educators to teach academic courses in English Chemistry Algebra Geometry Algebra 2 and/or Physics. Courses will be taught to students in high school students in rising 9th12th grades. The positions require someone who has passion innovation and knowledge to motivate and challenge students to generate skills necessary for college success. We seek instructors who can develop strong curriculum that addresses students needs interests abilities and curiosities in the subject.

Each course will be defined by:

  • Small classes up to 25 students)

  • Daily inclass instruction group work realworld application of concepts taught quizzes

  • Pre & post assessments

  • Instructors are given 12 offsite prep hoursfor each class taught.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop a course proposal/set of lesson plans that state goals/objectives student learning outcomes methods needed to obtain goals/objectives/outcomes.

  • Design and implement a course syllabus that effectively outlines daily concepts covered inclass & homework assignments quizzes group work projects pre/post assessment.

  • Establish classroom management policies and procedures needed to maintain a productive engaging classroom environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and support of MCUB mission vision value statements standards policies and procedures operating instructions confidentiality standards and the code of ethical behavior

  • At the conclusion of the course the instructor will write a narrative evaluation on each student.

  • Participate in MCUB weekly staff meetings.

  • Attend instructor orientation/planning sessions and program activities.

Knowledge of:

  • Thorough knowledge of subject matter and skill acquisition in subject being taught

  • Knowledgeable of California Content standards for subject area (academic courses)

  • Knowledge of child/adolescent development and different learning styles

Skills/Abilities:

  • Skills and knowledge to effectively work with students with diverse academic socioeconomic cultural linguistic and ethnic backgrounds

  • Ability to understand and enforce all MCUB Program policies

Education and Training:

  • Minimum of a Bachelors Degree. Preferred candidate holds Teaching Credential or working towards Teaching Credential.

  • Minimum 2 years experience teaching in related subject.

  • Minimum 2 years direct working relationship/or teaching lowincome firstgeneration collegebound students.

  • Strong preference given to Oakland Unified School District teachers.

Physical Mental and Environmental Demands:

  • Requires passing fingerprinting and a background check.

  • Requires certificate of completion of Mandated Reporting Training within the last year.
