Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticuts Department of Physiology and Neurobiology (PNB) is seeking an enthusiastic flexible fulltime Laboratory Technician 2 for large Physiology and Anatomy teaching laboratories. Under the general supervision of the Lab Supervisor the candidate will provide technical support and related assistance for the PNB Department including the preparation and setup of laboratory exercises in the teaching laboratories. The candidate will support teaching activities of faculty and teaching assistants in the Physiology and Anatomy courses for the Physiology and Neurobiology Department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports instructional teams in offering and revamping laboratory courses.
  • Cleans organizes sets up and breaks down weekly laboratories.
  • Prepares solutions reagents and other lab materials.
  • Works with and troubleshoots data acquisition equipment and other electronic and mechanical apparatus and associated computer programs.
  • Works with preserved animals and tissues including dissections.
  • Works with live animals and performs humane euthanasia dissects tissues and processes animal blood.
  • Prepares operates tests and evaluates laboratory equipment and resolves problems.
  • Suggests edits to lab manuals and other written material and keeps current with new procedures.
  • Reports problems with experimental methods and techniques.
  • Assists teaching assistants and students with technical problems related to laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Adheres to safety and standard operating procedures regarding chemical and biological safety and animal care in accordance with training.
  • Maintains necessary records and inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Participates in lab meetings and teaching assistant training.
  • Works independently while seeking guidance when needed.
  • Evening hours are required.
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelors degree in science with a strong background in physiology and anatomy or a related area.
  2. Three years of related experience.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of scientific principles and general laboratory techniques.
  4. Ability to use common laboratory equipment and associated computer programs.
  5. Experience working with animals.
  6. Proficiency with MS Word and Excel.
  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  8. Flexibility and adaptability in all aspects of the job including work hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience in a teaching laboratory.
  2. Experience operating specialized electronic and mechanical laboratory equipment and fluency in associated computer programs.
  3. Experience with animal euthanasia animal blood and other aspects of laboratory animal use.
  4. Excellent organizational skills including initiative and attention to detail.
  5. Ability to work in a team setting and maintain good working relationships with a variety of people including graduate and undergraduate students office staff faculty and animal care staff.
  6. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
