The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is seeking a qualified candidate with strong scientific skills to fill one 1 limited period position of Marine Resource Scientist I located at the West Boothbay Harbor Laboratory.
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a newly created position to conduct research to aid in the conservation and management of North Atlantic right whales and other large whales for the State of Maine. This position will assist the Division of Marine Mammal Survey Programs staff with planning designing and implementing research and response visual surveys for North Atlantic right whales. This position will actively participate in the field conducting visual survey work on both vessel and aerial sampling platforms. Tasks will include developing survey plans data collection protocols managing the necessary survey permits collecting data in the field performing QA/QC data tasks and assisting with program reporting and publications. This position will coordinate with other team members contractors and other programs within ME DMR. The applicant may further be tasked with assisting in statistical analysis under the Divisions Modeling Lead. Work will be performed with limited supervision and independent willingness to grow the position is highly encouraged.
Applicants should have survey experience in both aerial and vessel based marine mammal surveys and familiarization with distance sampling methodology is strongly preferred. Field experience specifically surveying right whales and knowledge of the New England Aquarium Right Whale Catalog is strongly preferred. Applicants should be comfortable working with groups of scientists vessel crew and pilots in a range of environmental conditions that can be challenging.

Experience with coding languages (R) and GIS (ESRI products) is preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Entry level education training or experience in a scientific technical or engineering discipline with demonstrated experience in the field of marine resource research and management or another related field.
