Associate Director Random House Publishing Services
Penguin Random House Publisher Services is seeking an associate director to build and edit a new program of Englishlanguage manga for a client publisher. This is a unique opportunity to build a catalog of translated manga from the ground up so the successful candidate will have the attention to detail of an editor the confidence and drive of an entrepreneur and the savvy to coordinate work across borders. The client is a major Japanbased entertainment company that is entering the Englishlanguage book publishing market directly for the first time. Working with the experienced staff at PRHPS the associate director will guide the clients representatives through this process while recruiting and supervising additional staff as the program grows.
Responsibilities:
Develop broad publishing strategy and recommend manga for publication in English
Coordinate development and client approval of overall branding for the program and design work for individual titles
Assist client in determining publication details including onsale dates trim sizes format etc.
Work with production manager and client to edit and produce manga volumes for the initial launch period
Act as liaison between PRHPSs sales and production teams and client
Represent manga program publicly to media and fans including at retail/library trade shows and conventions
Recruit and manage editor(s) as necessary to expand the program over the long term
Requirements:
At least five years of experience in book publishing (manga or graphic novel publishing strongly preferred)
Unquenchable passion for Japanese comics
Impeccable organizational skills
Ability to set priorities calmly under pressure in a crosscultural context (experience with Japanese business a major plus)
Ability to edit translated manga (at least intermediate Japanese reading level required)
Prior supervisory experience preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite
