About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Program Specialist under the direction of the Bureau of Field Operations Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety (YOVASO) program located in Salem Virginia. The successful candidate will work to increase statewide participation among schools students and community youth groups in the YOVASO program; and will work directly with schools and community youth groups to establish studentled safe driving clubs and/or servicelearning projects for the classroom. Responsibilities include developing and evaluating traffic safety educational programs projectbased learning lessons and safe driving curriculum that align with standards of learning to help students actively lead young driver and passenger safety initiatives. This position will also Coordinate membership services for schools and youth groups; develop leadership training curricula and coaches students and adult sponsors on their role as advocates for safe teen driving; work with the YOVASO team and VSP to market the YOVASO mission develop new strategies for young driver safety programs and plan and staff safety events and conferences including the annual YOVASO fourday Summer Leadership Retreat; and collaborate with external organizations and community leaders on a statewide level to build resources and expand initiatives aimed at reducing crashes injuries and fatalities among young drivers and passengers. This position is based at Division VI Headquarters 3775 West Main Street Salem VA.

Minimum Qualifications

Direct knowledge and experience with educational Standards of Learning (SOL) including demonstrated ability to develop write and evaluate safety lessons projects and training curricula that align with SOLs.
Skills in operating computers and using Microsoft Office applications; and in strong organizational and time management skills.
Demonstrated ability to plan and execute a variety of events youth activities workshops and/or conferences; to communicate orally and in writing in English; to work a flexible work schedule and to travel throughout the Commonwealth including some weekend and overnight travel; to represent VSP and YOVASO on various traffic and public safety committees and projects; and to engage with youth as well as work professionally with school administrators teachers and community leaders.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Additional Considerations

Experience working as a teacher in a Virginia school system or with a youthrelated advocacy programs in an educational or program development role is preferred.
