The Swanson Wildlife Hospital at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA) has an immediate opening for a Licensed Veterinary Technician.

We are seeking a licensed veterinary technician that is energetic proactive team focused and interested in working in a dynamic educational setting that provides a compassionate environment for native wildlife while providing advanced veterinary care. The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment is interested in working with a diverse and challenging caseload and wants to work in a place that strongly values professional mentorship of students and collaborative teamwork. The successful candidate will join a team of four licensed veterinary technicians with decades of experience in wildlife medicine as well as three wildlife veterinarians. As a team member you will:

  • Provide exceptional nursing care to our patients including husbandry restraint as well as medical and diagnostic procedures under the supervision of a veterinarian.

  • Participate in daily patient rounds and communicate with licensed wildlife rehabilitators and the public.

  • Support hospital operations and maintenance.

  • Participate in teaching including instruction and training of veterinary students and wildlife interns and mentor veterinary technician students in our preceptorship program.

What qualifications are required

  • Associates degree in veterinary technology.

  • New York State licensure or eligibility to become licensed in NYS and 13 years of relevant experience in a veterinary hospital setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must be able to work collaboratively in a fastpaced demanding environment and have the ability to multitask with competing deadlines while paying close attention to details.

  • Must demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching students training veterinarians and licensed wildlife rehabilitators.

  • Able to develop and maintain excellent working relationships including communicating with staff students technicians veterinarians clients licensed wildlife rehabilitators and other wildlife professionals in a professional manner at all times.

  • Must have a commitment to ongoing career development and skill building.

  • Candidate must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position which includes but is not limited to stressful situations prolonged standing and kneeling as well as lifting and restraining patients.

The Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital (SWH) provides stateoftheart medical and surgical care for ill and injured native wildlife in New York State. Serving approximately 2000 patients annually we treat patients with a goal of release back to the wild in a supportive environment that emphasizes exceptional patient care. Our hospital staff has a passion for teaching and is dedicated to training veterinary students veterinary technician students and graduate veterinarians in wildlife medicine. Through innovative research projects we contribute new information to the field of wildlife medicine that improves our ability to care for our patients as well as our understanding of wildlife health. We collaborate extensively with other animal and wildlife professionals to achieve successful patient outcomes and advance wildlife medicine including Cornell University Hospital for Animals veterinary specialists state wildlife officials and licensed wildlife rehabilitators from across the state.
