The Interdisciplinary Science (IS) Department in collaboration with others is performing research in the areas of renewable integration and grid modernization. The goal of our research is to contribute to the development of nextgeneration technologies and tools that could facilitate the integration of renewable generation and other distributed energy resources into the power grid. The successful candidates will support projects on the planning operation and control of future power grids accounting for renewables and electrification to achieve clean energy goals using stateoftheart technologies.
The IS Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a oneyear appointment with an opportunity for a oneyear renewal to perform research in the area of electric power grids.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform cyberphysical system modeling and simulation for the power grid.
Perform research on power system dynamics and control under high inverterbased resources (IBRs).
Develop and apply artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) techniques for power system planning operation control and cybersecurity.
Position Requirements:
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
A Ph.D. with a broad knowledge of electric power systems.
A strong background in artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) applications in the power grid.
Experience with power system modeling simulation dynamics and/or optimization phasor and electromagnetic transient (EMT)based modeling and Python and/or Matlab programming.
Good written and oral communication skills be willing to take direction and be able to work with others as part of a project team.
Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Experience with commonly used tools such as OPALRT/RTDS PSS/E PSCAD EXata.
Knowledge of cybersecurity of industrial control systems and/or quantum computing.
Additional Information:
Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment.
BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a postdoc and/or in an R&D position excluding time associated with family planning military service illness or other lifechanging events.
Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $70200 $85000. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
